Agreeing with some of the anons here, I would use that tag (as a reader) to look for fic that has people who resemble me.

As a fanfic writer/reader (and POC), it's generally hard to find fic (well written at that) that does have a POC (that's not a Marysue). In response to those who mention "but it's not in canon", personally, I don't dig the race flip, I just look for stories that have OFCs of color, because that's the kind of story I want to read (and if I want it to be a self insert--shamelessly admitting it here--then damn it, I want the character to look like me and perhaps even share some cultural aspects with me. One can only read 'he stared into her blue eyes, her blonde hair billowing in the wind' or my favorite 'alabaster skin' before becoming disenchanted by the subject matter. Granted if it's a good story, that won't matter, but it depends what you're looking for).

I'm often on the lookout for well-written POC characters as well... but in canon. It's much more useful for me to go ask for recs of shows/books/etc. that feature such characters, trying to see if any of them are worth getting into, and then looking into fandom. Starting with the fics seems counterintuitive to me because fanfiction is so closely dependent on the source it draws from; reading a fic without even rudimentary knowledge of canon makes the story feel incomplete.

It's definitely a different experience than reading fic in a fandom you're familiar with, but that can be part of the fun. For me, it feels a bit like reading a mystery novel: you have to piece together the characters' interrelationships and backstories and motivations as you read.

Ah, I only look for OFCs in fandoms I'm already acquainted with, although I am on the look out for the same types of shows/books/etc. However, they just don't always appeal to me, so I tend to stick with fandoms I know and just look there (i.e. I don't like Grey's Anatomy, and although they do have POC in canon, the show lacks appeal for me).

While we're on the subject, do you have any recs (for shows, movies, etc) featuring POC?

Preferred genres, etc.? Not-Grey's Anatomy is a fairly huge category.

Haha, yeah, I suppose it is. TV drama, suspense, supernatural, mystery are my preferred genres. Movies and books I'm fairly open to all.
