Re: Unpopular Fandom Opinions

I've got to kind of disagree, but only *within* fandom circles, because tbh I see the opposite literally 500% more often than I see "they're not gay!!!!" What I always see is the smug "lol, we all KNOW they're gay, they wouldn't act like that if they weren't gay, and [the most fucking annoying phrase of all] the only explanation for this is that they're gay (which irritates me even when I see people say it for a slash pairing I'm totally obsessed with -- why so goddamn restrictive and limiting? I thought a big purpose of slash was to be expansive and inclusive of a broader range of interpretations)" is ALL over, whereas I barely ever see "ew they're not gay" anywhere within fandom circles. Gen or het shippers are almost always "yeah, I see where the slashers are coming from but it's just not my thing."

However, that may just be because of how slash-heavy my fandoms are. Sheer volume tends to be the biggest of irritants, so I would probably not have this opinion if I was into less slash-heavy fandoms.

Now, outside of close fandom circles of the female-majority, fanfic-and-discussion, LJ school of fandom? IA with your opinion 100%, especially the whole "being gay taints their friendships" thing that happens on general forums. Like, jesus fuck. Aren't romantic relationships that have friendship at their core the best sort of romantic relationship? I mean, I totally can see why people can like a platonic interpretation better than a romantic one, but thinking it "taints" the friendship is not only homophobic but also unimaginative and totally insecure.

Yep, this absolutely.

"ew not gay, they are just friends, ugh"

or

"they are totally gay!"

Hmm, which is more offensive...

i see you've never come across "sterek for gay rights" type of people.

ayrt

The former is more offensive, even if the latter is more annoying (to me) because I see it more. The former is actually nasty and homophobic. The latter is just immature.

The former would be more irritating to me if I ran in circles that weren't so slash-saturated though.

You're going out of context. If indeed it's just those statements, it's fine.

But it's not. It's the shit you responded too. It's smug motherfuckers going "oh they are so obviously gay oh you poor little normies how can you not seeeee" and usually insterting that "cause HE'S SO GAY" into conversations that weren't about sexuality at all until that asshole showed up...

So it's more like

"Yeah, no, they aren't gay"

vs

(4 paragraph essay on why that person is wrong and also a call to dogpile).

and that's a lot more fucking annoying then the person who just wants to wait for a character to actually say/do something in canon before they go to that conclusion.

That "ugh" isn't always "Ugh, homophobes". A lot of times it's "Ugh, you shitting up the board with your reaching theories FOR THE FIFTH THREAD. TODAY."
