[Interview with the Vampire]

I thought Cruise as Lestat sounded terrible from the moment they announced it way back when. I was genuinely surprised there were so many people who thought it was a good casting.

Same here. I remember the reaction being: WHAT THE SLIPPERY FUCK, REALLY?

I think he did an okay job with it, but I wouldn't have cast Tom Cruise after reading the books.

Me too and while I don't think he was terrible, I will always think he was miscast.

I flipped out because I thought it was the WORST CASTING EVER, then ended up liking him in the movie anyway.

Age I can see an argument for but height doesn't matter so much on film. That is what boxes are for. And heels (looking at you RDJ).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And camera angles.

I didn't realize RDJ was small, so they did a good job it seems.

It's amazing how much charisma plays in how you physically view someone. Yes, Cruise looked nothing like Lestat who is also supposed to look French. But with the way Cruise acted and carried himself, most people could see Lestat in him even if they couldn't SEE Lestat in him.

I still have yet to actually read the books (despite having been watching the movie since it came out) but I do remember the fits people (Anne Rice included) were having when he was cast. Still, while I can't speak to how I would envision book!Lestat, I do maintain that Tom's performance as Lestat is my favorite of all of his roles that I've seen. So in that respect, and maybe with a cloud of nostalgia, I don't think I could picture anyone else as Lestat no matter how he's described in the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Anne Rice hand-picked Cruise though, so how would she be having a fit?

I liked him okay as Lestat, but Stuart Townsend was still better, even though everyone seems to hate the QotD movie.

LOL no

[personal profile] queerwolf 2014-06-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem with the QotD movie is that is was a horrible mashup of that book and The Vampire Lestat. I'm surprised that anyone who hasn't read the books was able to enjoy it/make sense of it. That aside, I did prefer ST's Lestat.

Stuart looked even less like book Lestat but IMO carried the attitude better. I mean, they did pretty much play two different characters because IWtV is Lestat-from-Louis's-point-of-view. But yeah.

I really agree and this shouldn't be a secret.

I think he played it well considering, but I still do not see him as Lestat.

I never would've cast Tom Cruise as Lestat in my mind, but I guess because I didn't expect much from him, he turned out to be a much better Lestat than I thought. Stuart Townsend may have been a better fit physically but I just get so bored watching Queen of the Damned.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I still support Anne Rice's first choice for Lestat, Julian Sands. At the time he was the walking embodiment of the character and would have been perfect. He did a vampire movie that put IwtV to shame. BUT the studio wanted a big name and Julian Sands has always been a B actor.

Anne Rice already threw and overly dramatic fit about the casting (and then took it back), so you're not the only one who thinks he didn't look like the descriptions in the book.

I always thought someone like Sting (circa The Bride) should have played him.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember very distinctly thinking he should look like a tall, blond 80s rockstar (for some value of rock).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I remember reading an interview with Rice once that she saw Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner back when the movie first came out and thought he would be the perfect Lestat.

Honestly, I can't see it. But that's how she's sees how Lestat looks like.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I think he's perfect for Lestat. I can forgive tiny details like height. After all, isn't like, Wolverine supposed to be short, yet whatshisname is pretty much perfect as Wolverine. And though Anne Rice was initially opposed to him, once she saw him as Lestat she basically thought he was perfect, too.

Best thing about that movie, I must say.

Lestat's personality has always been a much bigger aspect of him than his looks, and Cruise sold that shit like water in the desert. It felt like he hit that just-right pitch of fascinating, charming, and completely fucking insufferable.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have no real opinion on both Cruise and Pitt, I love the movie for Kirsten Dunst and Christian Slater and despise the casting choice of Banderas.
