[Andrew Lloyd Webber]

Spill the dirt, OP!

What did Patti LuPone's books say? Honestly, I'm not surprised. He doesn't come off as a very nice person in interviews.

Re; Sunset Boulevard, she originated the role of Norma Desmond when the show premiered in London, and was under contract to take it to Broadway. Then ALW decided he wanted Glenn Close for the Broadway tranfer instead and informed Lupone that she'd been fired . . . right before she was about to go onstage.

She (rightfully) sued him for breach of contract and won. Hilariously, she used the settlement money to build "The Andrew Lloyd Weber Memorial Pool" at her house.

Not OP, but I think this is what OP's referring to.

Look, I like cracked.com as much as the next person, but I wouldn't put too much stock in anything they say.

... except that the accusations of plagiarism are actually true. It's just that most of the time, Webber stole from classical music, Puccini or Mendelssohn.

No, he's actually been sued by the estates of the composers he plagiarized. He settled out of court with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but he really did steal the main Phantom riff from a Pink Floyd song so...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from the fact that he settled with the Puccini estate out of court (Puccini's a lot more recent than non-opera people think -- he only died in 1924), you can also just listen for yourself:

Hah, you had respect for Andrew Lloyd Webber?

Just kidding, anon; welcome to the club.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly I don't like the guy, either. He's a creep, clearly idolizes certain singers to the point that they are *the* only (insert role here) for him. Heck, one of his most famous works is basically a self-insert exercise (Phantom of the Opera), and almost everyone around him during that time admits to it.

Is that why he wrote that sequel musical where Christine and the phantom end up together?

Right? Like his relationship with Sarah Brightman makes Phantom so creepy for me. Like it's so... obvious and weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK why people'd like him much at all, anyway. His musicals are almost always terrible.

See, all I can think of when I think of Andrew Lloyd Webber is the Comedy Bang Bang version of Andrew Lloyd Webber, so I can't take him seriously at all anymore.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I lost all respect for him when I heard his appalling right wing views. Guy is a piece of shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
ewww, links please? (I'll decide later if I actually want to read them)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
What right wing views?

I mean, he's in theater, so...

It's considered "borrowing" or "homage", not plagiarizing.

I like some of his stuff, but I'm not a huge fan. Team Sondheim.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Borrowing" and "Homage" involve acknowledging the fact that you are using someone else's work, which I have not seen him do.

(Team Sondheim too!)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. This is not an argument that flies. Ask Vanilla Ice or George Harrison.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Look, I don't know much about this guy or the alleged plagiarism, but I'm going to say this:

It's a homage/nod to a work when it's acknowledged

If you don't cite/source in some way, then it's plagiarism

If true, that makes me sad. I like Webber's music. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, diet. I was just getting back into my musicals collection, and just replaced my Phantom CD (London version). So many memories tied to that shit, man.

I even like Cats unironically.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't loved most of his stuff since like, junior high. But Jesus Christ Superstar remains my favorite musical of all time.
