i feel the same way about a lot of actors (including the one in my icon). the magic only happens if you have the complete recipe (good script, good directing, good actor, good editing) and finding it is hard, even for very talented actors. look at bryan cranston or michael emerson. if it wasn't for malcolm in the middle and lost, respectively, they'd still be nobodies. bryan cranston found it a second time with breaking bad, and while it's a testament to his talent, he said himself that he was very lucky.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. That's one of the things that keeps the racist and sexist structures around casting in place, and also sinks the careers of a lot of child actors before they can really grow into their talent.

Assume that you have a 5% chance of getting lucky with a given role, where it's in something really good that people like, that showcases you well. And now assume that you have to get lucky twice to have a lasting career. Already the odds aren't good. Now assume that, as a child actor, you have to hit those two roles within specific, narrow timeframes. Or, as a non-white-guy actor, that you're less likely--even 10% less likely--to even have a shot at those roles. The chances of a great career have just dropped from bad to abysmal.

It doesn't take a conspiracy of systematic oppression to keep these structures in place; just a little bit of unthinking prejudice, a little stupidity, and the already-punishing mathematics of showbiz become impossible to survive.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
the already-punishing mathematics of showbiz...that you made up!

Look, your original point was good, but the fake math didn't help it at all. Worse, it devalued it because then I'm left to wonder a.) if you made anything else up and b.) how much you really know what you're talking about.

If you want to be persuasive/help an argument, don't use made up "facts."

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Michael Emerson is great on Person of Interest, too. There are a lot of actors from Lost that were able to shine in their roles and I wish they'd had luck as good as Emerson with their later projects (Terry O'Quinn in particular)

oh, yeah, i love him on poi! i talked about lost because it's the role that made him famous, but i absolutely love him and i enjoy his performance in everything he does.
evangeline lilly has desolation of smaug, which made her even more famous, but the others don't seem to have had that kind of success. every show that had a lost alumni as a main cast member was cancelled, except poi. v, revolution, intelligence, alcatraz, 666 park avenue... it's like they're cursed or something.

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-10 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope so too. He tends to be excellent in the films he's in (er...usually; I thought he ended up looking silly in The Covenant and I know it wasn't entirely his fault because the script was...something else, but...yea, even he couldn't save that role) even when the films on a whole leave much to be desired. I'll be so pleased for him if he's cast in some better projects. (And I don't see why he wouldn't be, given his sudden popularity.) He deserves it.
dwell_ondreams: (Cap 2: Body shot)

[personal profile] dwell_ondreams 2014-06-10 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. His filmography is lackluster, at best. I, personally, thought Kings & Political Animals were good shows, but outside Cap, that's all he's done that I've actually liked.

Chris Evans has a pretty crappy filmography too, overall, but there are still a lot of his films that I enjoy watching. Are they bad? YES. But they're FUN. I love Johnny Storm (SO MUCH LOVE FOR THIS CHARACTER) (Fantastic Four was ok; Silver Surfer, not so much, imo), What's Your Number amused the hell out of me, I really liked Push. I LOVE The Losers. And so forth & so on.

They're BOTH really good actors. They deserve better.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I was so shocked when I realized he played Johnny Storm! I had to rewatch The Fantastic Four Again, haha.

I think it's because Cap and Johnny are such totally different characters personality-wise that I didn't realize.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but Chris Evans has some films that are actually watchable. I love The Losers as well, and I genuinely liked Push, and Snowpiercer is actually good though depressing as fuck. Sebastian Stan has Kings and Political Animals, which both had more downs than ups and he was, hands down, the best thing about them, but his film resume? Unwatchable.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
At the very least, Chris will always have Sunshine under his belt <3

The MCU seems to launch a lot of careers (or at least make the actors really popular). I mean, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were mostly unknowns. Robert Downey Jr. became popular again (but that also had to do with proving he can stay sober). Jeremy Renner maybe? I don't know much about him except Hurt Locker and Avengers.

Renner was also in 28 weeks later, I found this out when channel hopping the other day and recognised the random army dude sniping rage-zombies and it turned out to be him.

Slightly offtopic, but to this day I like to mention "Don't you remember Chris Hemsworth as Kirk's dad?"

I know this is a bit late... Renner was in SWAT with Sam L. Jackson. He also got his own Bourne spinoff and he was in the last Mission Impossible, Six I think.

SWAT was a while ago, I'll admit and he looks like a blonder Nathan Fillion. Oh and he gets to be the bad guy.

Anything outside of action movies tends to be outside my radar.

Oh, and that P!nk Trouble Music video. Always good for amusement and Renner in eyeliner.

segnung: A dyad in the force. ([film: CA; OTP] Don't hurt me now)

His filmography is so unwatchable, save for some television work.

He deserves better, though, as he is very watchable and talented, in spite of his previous work. His stage work, from what I've seen is excellent and I know he seems to prefer that since he actually gets to work other very talented and esteemed people. Aside from his nine film deal with Marvel, he doesn't have anything else listed so far on imdb, and I hope that changes soon.

/I have too many feelings about this

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I watched Political Animals and Kings just because of him and I actually sort of... liked and enjoyed them? They weren't my favorite things ever, but I don't regret watching them.

Also, I had only ever seen Sebastian Stan in the Winter Soldier before and just checked the rest of his stuff out because of all the hype, but damn, he rally can act. He can express so much pain and sadness with his eyes.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I need to see him in my bed

I want to take this opportunity to let everyone who doesn't know know that he's a hilarious (and mostly silent!) supporting character in an indie called Red Doors, which you can watch on YouTube and which is at least 1/3 lesbian romcom. He and the super-excellent youngest daughter are engaged in the most epic high school prank war, and the whole movie is really, really great.

Am I seeding things for Yuletide? You'd better believe it.

It would be nice for him as he does have the range - on the other hand, he's signed to Marvel for te foreseeable future, so not sure how much time he'll have for side projects.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I want him to star in a romantic comedy with Mackie as his love interest.

Why do I think I'm going to get around to seeing this movie only to be totally flummoxed by the fan reaction?

[personal profile] amber_protocol 2014-06-11 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, I was kinda the opposite from fandom at large when it comes to this movie. I was rolling my eyes at all the hype for Bucky/WS before it came out because I didn't gaf about him in the first film and I was more looking forward to Natasha and Sam, so the overwhelming standom for Bucky was grating. Then I saw the movie, still didn't think that much of him (he stressed me out because he was trying to kill everyone), but with subsequent viewings he's definitely become a highlight of the movie for me. Although I'm not as rending my garments as a lot of people can be over him, I feel a lot worse for Steve than Bucky, just on an emotionally invested level as opposed to logically since he has been through more than Steve.

You've gotta be careful with hype, I was left underwhelmed from my first watch of WS but it's grown so much on me now that it's my favourite of the individual MCU movies. [/not helping manage your expectations]

I feel that he's done some really decent work. I'm sorry that his body of work is not up to YOUR standard, person who has probably never acted in anything and can't compare resumes anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
lolololol you don't need to be an actor to be able to tell that a movie is crap

stan himself thinks most of his part filmography was crap so ...
