This seems to come up a lot (with different characters obv) and I've never understood this. Why does that cause you to dislike him? Can you not separate the character from the fanbase? Can you not do your best to avoid discussion/stanning/etc. of him online if it turns you off from the character?

I might have agreed with you before I came across Levi from SnK. I know I'm not alone on that. Levi physically abuses and yells at a young girl, and people blame the girl saying she deserved it. Because Levi is so popular he's got more apologist and he gets away with it. It makes a lot of people uncomfortable. So in this case fandom ruins a character through it's apologists and how overwhelming the support for him doing bad things is.

Don't understand why people would hate Makoto b/c of fanbase because he is a genuinely kind person. His character might not appeal to everyone, but he hasn't done anything deserving of hate.

You assume that everyone hates characters because the character does something that might be considered "morally bad" by someone.

I hate characters because they're boring or shittily written characters.

What? When? Was it a recent chapter? I'm not in the fandom anymore, but there was no mention of anything like that, so I'm assuming it's new. And Levi was already popular back when I was in the fandom. So if this indeed happened, he's probably excused because he was popular already. And/or if he beat the girl for similar reasons as to when he beat Eren during the trial (which was the big controversy about him that I remember), because context is very important.

I'm a little bit confused by your comparison because that sounds like an instance in which the character was disliked or neutral before the fandom response. I'm talking (and I believe OP is talking) about an already-liked character.

uhhh do you mean that time Levi spoke sharply and... I can't remember, did he slap? one of HIS SOLDIERS? Seriously? Physically abuse?

It's one thing to say his actions were wrong. But to call Historia a "young girl" (and take away her work as a soldier, and lower her to something of a child) is pretty horrible. And my god, if you tell me we're not allowed to even yell at some of these characters...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, AYRT is talking about Historia? No wonder I had no idea what they meant.

It's not always that easy. I've actually had a pairing soured for me because I *couldn't* avoid the fans who bashed the ~rival~ ship, even in comms that had nothing to do with the pairing. The only real option was to just leave the fandom, or deal with it...and dealing with it soured me [and I liked other aspects of that fandom too much to want to leave.]

I've seen characters who, while not in my fandoms, were as bad if not worse than that pairing where you couldn't say you even remotely disliked them without getting dogpiled...and again, this was general fandom space not a group specifically for that character.

So yeah, easier said than done in a number of cases.

True. I suppose though I'd still be able to keep the pairing itself separate from the fandom...and I still don't really understand the association since it's the pairing that made the fandom, not the other way around. Different thought pattern maybe?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe. For me it wasn't overnight, but months of "This pairing comes up and people who don't ship it get attacked" led to "Oh god, fuck this pairing people are always getting attacked over it."

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Curse you mis-click demon!]

So it's more the constant negative emotions that happen whenever the pairing came up got associated with the pairing since, well, they always happened together.

Objectively there was nothing wrong with the pairing, and I wasn't going to hate someone/bash them/whatever for liking it...but I did *not* like it at all.
