This seems to come up a lot (with different characters obv) and I've never understood this. Why does that cause you to dislike him? Can you not separate the character from the fanbase? Can you not do your best to avoid discussion/stanning/etc. of him online if it turns you off from the character?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I might have agreed with you before I came across Levi from SnK. I know I'm not alone on that. Levi physically abuses and yells at a young girl, and people blame the girl saying she deserved it. Because Levi is so popular he's got more apologist and he gets away with it. It makes a lot of people uncomfortable. So in this case fandom ruins a character through it's apologists and how overwhelming the support for him doing bad things is.

Don't understand why people would hate Makoto b/c of fanbase because he is a genuinely kind person. His character might not appeal to everyone, but he hasn't done anything deserving of hate.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
You assume that everyone hates characters because the character does something that might be considered "morally bad" by someone.

I hate characters because they're boring or shittily written characters.

Levi physically abuses and yells at a young girl

What? When? Was it a recent chapter? I'm not in the fandom anymore, but there was no mention of anything like that, so I'm assuming it's new. And Levi was already popular back when I was in the fandom. So if this indeed happened, he's probably excused because he was popular already. And/or if he beat the girl for similar reasons as to when he beat Eren during the trial (which was the big controversy about him that I remember), because context is very important.

I'm a little bit confused by your comparison because that sounds like an instance in which the character was disliked or neutral before the fandom response. I'm talking (and I believe OP is talking) about an already-liked character.

uhhh do you mean that time Levi spoke sharply and... I can't remember, did he slap? one of HIS SOLDIERS? Seriously? Physically abuse?

It's one thing to say his actions were wrong. But to call Historia a "young girl" (and take away her work as a soldier, and lower her to something of a child) is pretty horrible. And my god, if you tell me we're not allowed to even yell at some of these characters...

It's not always that easy. I've actually had a pairing soured for me because I *couldn't* avoid the fans who bashed the ~rival~ ship, even in comms that had nothing to do with the pairing. The only real option was to just leave the fandom, or deal with it...and dealing with it soured me [and I liked other aspects of that fandom too much to want to leave.]

I've seen characters who, while not in my fandoms, were as bad if not worse than that pairing where you couldn't say you even remotely disliked them without getting dogpiled...and again, this was general fandom space not a group specifically for that character.

So yeah, easier said than done in a number of cases.

True. I suppose though I'd still be able to keep the pairing itself separate from the fandom...and I still don't really understand the association since it's the pairing that made the fandom, not the other way around. Different thought pattern maybe?

Well...sorry? You could just avoid the fanbase, but if you're a huge free! fan you might not want to. On the other hand if the fanbase is making you hate the character, maybe that's good enough reason; it doesn't sound worth it imo.

I'm not into the fanbase at all and along with Rei, he's my favorite.

Yeah, I've had it where fans caused me to not like a character or a thing because they never shut up about how AMAZINGGG the character or thing was and it just got to be too much and made me react with irritation and dislike. Sucks because it damages the fun you can have with that fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hate him too, but it's not because of the fandom. I don't even know why. He just bothers me for some reason. And it's weird because I usually like "the nice one" in group casts.

Maybe it's because of the dumb look he always seems to have on his face? But maybe I just think the look is dumb because I hate him.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe your a RinHaru fan? Not trying to be rude but that tends to be the crowd that hates him the most.

I love Mako to pieces, but he IS sorta creepy. He's got that vacant, haunted smile of a man who'd probably smother Rin in his sleep while softly, gently whispering to his struggling form: 'I won't let you have him...' (him being Haru). He'd keep the smile on his face while methodically chopping up Rin's lifeless corpse, then grinding it up and feeding it to the local homeless cats.

Of course, when news of Rin's grisly murder breaks free, nobody would suspect Mako as he lovingly comforts Haru and the rest of their friends.

Nobody would suspect him. With a face like that? Of course he's innocent...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"I hate him"

"It's dislike with borderline hate"

okay so which is it.

Also not once in your secret did you give any reason to hate the CHARACTER other than that you find his stans insufferable. Which, they very much are, and he's the most boring vanilla (I said it, yes) character of the bunch (though to be fair, he hasn't gotten ANY chances of character development, kind of like Nagisa, and all signs from Season 2 point to him having a chance to grow as a person now that the ReiRinHaru kerfluffle has been resolved), so I can see why someone might not like him.

But ffs try harder.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
His codependent, stifling relationship with Haru is what mainly creeps me out.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
It's never portrayed as stifling though. They've been friends since childhood, they might as well be brothers. People try to spin it negatively, but that is not the intention behind their characters. In all the interviews, songs, in the show and all show related material it's always portrayed as a positive relationship in which they are grateful to have each other.

The only reason Makoto had to look after Haru as much as he did in s1 was because Haru was depressed and not going to school.

If you consider having a supportive friend 'stifling', than that's just your own opinion. I think Makoto and Haru give each other plenty of space do not to force each other into uncomfortable situations, but they are not going to leave each other alone if they see the other suffering. I just don't get how anyone can view them as unhealthy and codependent when they are just as close as family who grew up together.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
For a character with such a big presence in the show and in the merch, he's got precious little character development. He's mostly static throughout the whole storyline, and mostly just exists to be the sweet "selfless best friend" counterpart to Haru's spicier "fated rival" relationship with Rin. I'm neutral on him, because there isn't enough there to get invested in either way. His fans who lionize him as the sole important person in Haru's life are morons who misunderstand canon, though.

Word along the grapevine is that he's going to get some character development in season 2. But anything that paints him in a less-than-flattering light will probably have all the Makoto stans rage quitting. (Good riddance, says I.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I could have sworn I heard the people behind free! said there was going to be a change in Makoto's character and he would be more like a 'captain'. Does this mean we finally get to see him get legit angry and forceful? I think most Makoto fans would actually welcome that.

The only people who would give him shit for that are the people who criticize him as he is now. It's one think to just not like Makoto because he's not your cup of tea, but so many of his haters have to twist things so far to make him look bad. The thing haters like to use most often is that he's manipulative towards Haru. I'm just... I don't know how to react to that.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I can't find anything at all to dislike about him. He is pleasant, and less crazy than his friends.

Unfortunately, he doesn't really grow or change, or have much that makes him a unique character, so I can't quite love him.

I'm not in this fandom, but to be honest I find it really refreshing that for once the popular character is the legitimately super nice, friendly, sweet guy as opposed to the 'bad boy'.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
And you would not believe how bitter the fans of the "bad boy" character are about that ;)

I have actively ignored/avoided the existence of English-language fandom for this series (well, apart from on /a/) since day one. It appears I have nothing to regret.

...how can you hate Makoto, anon? It's like hating kittens, or puppies. Does not compute at all.

I will never get how fandom can ruin a character. And I've seen some pretty shitty/annoying fandoms in my time.
