I'm not in this fandom, but to be honest I find it really refreshing that for once the popular character is the legitimately super nice, friendly, sweet guy as opposed to the 'bad boy'.

I haven't seen Free, but is Rin considered the bad boy? If so, that's a bit of a shame. I like his character design the most. Plus, you know, Mamoru Miyano.

Then again, considering how huge Free is on pixiv, there's still probably a ton of fanart of him.

Yeah, he still gets plenty of attention and is one of the most versatile characters to ship, his fans are just bitter that he's number two and not number one. (Because obviously his relationship with Haru is the most important and central part of the plot.)

Well, it is. It drives the entire plot of season 1. Without Rin, there would be no plot in season 1 of Free!
