This is exactly one of the things that makes me love Fry. I never interpreted it as "you can't be offended", more like "you being offended does not inherently give you some sort of moral highground". And I think he's right.

Well he should have fucking said "Being offended does not inherently give you some sort of moral highground" if that's what he fucking meant, instead of saying something that's much easier to interpret the other way.

He said what he said, and we can all interpret it the way we want. Personally I think "I'm offended" has started to hold way too much weight.

DA

I agree with you 100%.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Preciously. Don't get me wrong; there are legitimate times that "I'm offended" holds weight and deserves discussion, but some people just always feel offended about everything. Case in point: Tumblr SJWs who try to use the "I'm offended" card to gain some sort of authority. Also, the rampant misuse of Trigger Warnings. I shouldn't be responsible for everyone's feelings.

Trying to anticipate people having poor reading comprehension or simply being assholes about context is not something anyone can anticipate and prevent with 100% success, anon. You seem angry, but let's not blame a dude for because he can't control how people misinterpret his words.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well if you took the five seconds to google the quote you would find out that he did say this and this quote is only a snippet of something larger.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
lol maybe you shouldn't be a twat and actually read what he said and its context, rather than taking one quote and getting mad about it when you likely have no idea who he even is

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Why should we care "who he is"? He's not God. Though with some of his followers around the Net, it's hard to tell.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, people on the internet being morons is Stephen Fry's fault. Well spotted, anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Just imagine people like that anon at school/uni. What will they do after failing a literature exam for missing the point? Whine at the teacher "Well it's not MY fault I missed the point, the author should have just written what they meant instead of using those stupid metaphor thingies!".

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes he's right, but at the same time I have some trouble swallowing it from him because of some of the more questionable things he's been known to say - and, more specifically, he's response when people called those out.
