Seriously, gifsets? Mistakes happen and once you've messed around with a gif for a while, uploaded it, erased the original images and only then noticed you made a mistake ... of course you're not going to go through it all again because of a missing comma. It's not like clicking edit.

I'm sorry but all I can see is Dean Winchester yelling at someone in the third person now.

"PLEASE DEAN! DON'T EAT THE SPINACH!"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it could also be: "Please Dean, don't eat the spinach."

Soooooo....you don't mind spelling errors or using the wrong word, except when people spell things wrong and use the wrong word?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. I'm not a strict prescriptivist, but a line must be drawn.

Well... Yeah. Me too. It's not like I'm sending hate mail. Isn't there enough terrible stuff on tumblr that we don't have to justify not reblogging things...?

I'm the same way. If I notice a grammar/spelling pet peeve of mine in the comments, I tend not to reblog. I feel like I'm endorsing the error if I reblog it.

My peeves are "then" vs. "than," "loose" vs. "lose," and "breathe" vs. "breath."

I know everyone makes mistakes, but those grammar/spelling peeves feel weirdly personal. (As in, I HATE some of them when others don't really bother me that much.)

I can usually ignore minor SPaG issues on the internet because I know not everyone is as good at picking out minute details as I am. I do have issues when I have read so much misspelled and grammatically incorrect writing that I find myself questioning exactly which version is the right one.

Don't even get me started on the people who use "phased" where it should be "fazed", though.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
People may be getting snotty at you for this, but I agree. Those two top things definitely bug me a lot, and I will automatically back button if I see them used repeatedly. I also get a bit pedantic about comma use - if commas are left out of sentences where they actually aid meaning, or put in sentences where they are completely unnecessary and in a weird spot to boot, I will also back button just because the story becomes painful to actually parse.

But it doesn't make me think the writer is a bad person or that I'm better than them in anyway, I just think they need to develop their proof-reading skills or get a good beta reader. No one is perfect at everything, and a lot of people find spelling and grammar hard. But if you want to be a writer at any level it's something you need to keep working at.

Anecdata time: One of my best friends childhood always found spelling difficult, even as a young adult. Spelling and grammar kind of came naturally to me, so she at times expressed jealousy over that to me. But she also wanted to be a writer, so she worked at improving her spelling as well as developing the journalistic style she needed over the years and is now very successful in her field.

My "cannot handle" peeve is using "discrete" when you're supposed to use "discreet."

"Discreet": careful and circumspect in one's speech or actions

"Discrete": individually separate and distinct.

It takes me right out of any piece of writing that this error pops up in (it's not even confined to fics). One of the pitfalls of spellcheck, since it will be cleared by both spellcheck AND grammar check, as they're both adjectives.

Some mistakes get to me more than others. I'm pretty lenient on missing or misplaced commas. If there are too many misspelled or outright wrong words, I'll backbutton outta there.

Once in junior high we had to trade papers and grade each other's work. The girl who graded my paper crossed out where I'd written "through" and wrote "thru" next to it. I'm still kind of steamed about it 22 years later.

What I hate is any instance of "for all intensive purposes." I mean, are you even thinking about what you're writing? Does that phrase even make sense to you?

"Thru" has been a shorthand for "through" since at least the 1970s.

So much for "lol text speak".

As long as they're not going 'quaffed' for 'coiffed' I can usually handle it. (I backspaced outta that fic as soon as I stopped laughing uproariously!)

I've tried to adjust my standards, which I know can be a little unreasonable for stuff people write in their free time and provide for free. But by golly, if there aren't still some things that just drive me bananas. :I To be honest, if a fic has poor spelling/grammar, I tend to just exit out immediately, because most of the time the writing isn't good enough to make up for it.

There actually was one fic, though, that had ATROCIOUS punctuation and pretty weird spelling, but all of the phrasing was terrific and the plot was awesome. It seemed like they'd typed it blindfolded. It was a delightful surprise.

Eh, a lot of people have that one error (or couple of errors) that drives them nuts. For me, it's lets vs let's.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I applaud you!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I just can't stand people who don't spell the character's names correctly. Why fan if you can't be bothered to learn how to spell your character's names?

I can handle a certain amount of grammar and spelling mistakes.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
My tolerance goes up the more interesting the story is usually. What really annoys me is when I can't even tell what word or phrase they were going for and the sentence makes no damn sense and not even context gives me a clue.

Then, of course, there are the ones that just amuse me - I read something the other night with "in carne" instead of "incarnate" and I had the most interesting mental images.

What makes me cringe in fic is not so much if there are one or two typos (happens to the best of us) but when I find several typos/errors and there's a huge thank-you to the beta at the top.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
affect/effect is one that really bugs me...

I'm with you on the gifsets, OP. I can't believe people don't spellcheck their gifs after going to so much trouble to make them, and I can't bring myself to <3 them.
