So this is now two secrets we've had about this movie being bad we've had in the past week? Did this just come out on DVD or something?

Anyway, I kind of agree with you. I loved the movie but it was in no way breaking ground or shattering conventions. It was an old school monsters and robots action movie, done really well and passionately. That's what was great about it, and refreshing in a way.

This is pretty much the only opinion I see? It was fun & entertaining & explody - and there's definitely some great fanart out there! But I have never seen anyone claiming anything beyond "fun"... o_O People were excited about it but it passed pretty quickly.

I totally agree. I love the hell out of this movie, and yay for black British hero with an adopted Japanese daughter who is also awesome, because you dont see much of THAT combo in Hollywood... but it's just a fun collection of kaiju and mecha tropes with rock music. Nothing ~revolutionary~.

+1

Agreed. It was a fun movie but nothing Earth shattering. I think the people who think it was mind blowing are not familiar with the genre. It was almost by the book in cliches.

Main character quits being a fighter after losing a loved one in a fight. CHECK. Is forced out of "retirement" because he is the perfect person to fight using old tech. CHECK. Another main character is an orphan and wants to get revenge for her family. CHECK. Another main character is a hot shot but in the end finds humility and goes out in a blaze of glory. CHECK. Eccentric science guys for comic relief. CHECK.

Like I said, it was by the book.

I only watched the first 30 minutes, couldn't get into it (there was one thing that seemed really stupid to me, but I can't remember what it was now).

i saw it at the theaters and the only thing it shattered is my eardrums.

more seriously, like i said on a similar secret earlier, i agree with you. if that's what sci-fi fans call unconventional, then count me out.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what it DID do? Not make you wait most of the movie to see a monster fight.

Oh look. More Pacific Rim hate. *yawns*

I feel the same way, OP. It was a great popcorn flick, but I don't really get the amount of tumblr love this movie gets. People act like it was some mind-blowing race-barrier crushing titan of a film and... yeah, no.

Everyone I know irl didn't like it or thought it was really stupid or had a lot of stupid nitpicky reasons they hated it, so I was glad for the online love even if it did get overhyped. It's a better movie than people give it credit for, imo. Maybe it wasn't revolutionary, but it was certainly better than comparable big-budget summer blockbuster fare.

I thought pretty much everyone thought it was overrated? at least everyone here

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw it expecting a fun dumb action movie with good special effects and instead it was a boring dumb action movie with lackluster special effects. Ugh.

Uh... I've never met anyone who holds that opinion. It got mixed reviews, and it was thoroughly mediocre from an artistic point of view, with some spectacular action scenes.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's my secret to enjoying Pacific Rim: I went in expecting nothing more than a giant robot movie and discovered that it was a giant robots vs. giant monsters movie! Best. Night. Ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, most people felt the same way.

The only hyped up ones had been the ones in charge of marketing. Toro made it thus the media / audience did expect something different than a standard flick.

Watched it recently - 3 tries, bored at work. ONE THING I WONDERED ABOUT - is the main character of a Roma background? Or a traveller one? The name of the main mecha had not been explained at all!

I don't understand why people act like this cast was diverse. There were, what, two main characters of colour? And a bunch of white dudes. Two of whom looked way too much alike.

But mostly what annoyed me is that the movie was set in Hong Kong but there were zero Chinese people with more than one or two speaking lines. Like, why bother having it set there at all?

I'm pretty sure this was less 'expectation' and more 'hope'

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-06-12 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
People were hoping it would redefine the genre, but I don't know how many people actually expected it.

Though to be fair, when movies "change a genre", it can take years or even a decade for that change to be apparent, so maybe there's still hope after all.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK what's to be surprised about. Every other explode-y action movie stars an all-white cast and everyone who isn't white isn't the focus. Why can't people be excited that they have an action hero that isn't white?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-12 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I know literally no Pacific Rim fans anywhere who thought it was groundbreaking, and sooooooo many people who hear any sort of lukewarm praise for the fact that, yay, not every single character was white as "OMG!!! MOST PROGRESSIVE MOVIE EVER!!!!!!! IF YOU HATE IT YOU'RE A RACIST WHO CAN GTFO AND DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-06-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I love it but it did get over-hyped somewhat, and it is a bit overrated in fandom, but the movie itself isn't trying to be anything other than a fun monster movie and personally I really appreciated that(anything else you can take from it was just a nice bonus tbh).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I didn't get the hype. But action movies aren't really my thing to start with, so whatever.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
The fact it sold shows that a leading non-romantic woman of color isn't as much a risk as Hollywood thinks, which, yes, is a good thing. Because it means they may do more since there's actually a market for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think they just love the idea of what the movie is instead of the actual "plot". To me it was really entertaining but really generic as well.
There are so many movies like this that manage to have a deeper meaning and even I wanted this to be something else. Also, you can't just throw in traumatizing childhoods into the mix without exploring or enhancing them! It meant nothing to me because they didn't give it enough weight imo, before everyone was back to being kickass in the suits.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-13 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone I know who'd seen Evangelion or Gundam beforehand had OP's reaction to the film, while everyone I know who hadn't, thought it was OMG SO AMAZING THIS IS SO IMPORTANT WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT MAKO MORI FRIENDLY REMINDER.
