Documentary films recs?

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2014-06-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Any good documentary movies?

Anything that you found interesting, fun or thought-provoking (rather than purely educational).

I haven't seen that many good docs actually, but here's my list, just to offer something in return.

Women with Cows 2011
Pervert's Guide to Cinema 2006
Blackfish 2013
Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl 1993
Grizzly Man 2005
Manor 2013
British Guide to Showing Off 2011
Sicko 2007

(Hey, and where's page 2?)

Page 2 takes a while to show up. There aren't many comments yet.

Oh right, I guess I was especially early.

I'd recommend Blackfish (2013). Especially if you want to feel sad and furious at the same time.

I've already seen that, but it sure does a good job on the emotional trauma part.

This is kind of funny to me out of context.

Last one that really affected me was How to Survive a Plague (2012)

Also, Surplus (not sure what year) is interesting, but might go beyond documentary genre into societal criticism.

Oh yeah, I saw How to Survive a Plague (and cool was it that in the end they did survive?)

Surplus I haven't seen yet.

"Jiro Dreams of Sushi" (2011) 85 year old with a tiny restaurant in a subway station is the world only 5 star sushi chef.

"Between the Folds" (2008) It's about extreme origami.

Re: Documentary films recs?

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2014-06-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, extreme origami, I must watch that immediately!

(But just your dry description next to the title really made me lol)

Seconding "Jiro..." I absolutely loved it; it changed the way I look at sushi (for the better! I've been ordering more nigiri and less maki at restaurants since watching it).

Not necessarily a documentary, but I found Life After People very interesting.

And Journey to the Edge of the Universe is incredible. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVQpwxgMQCg)

Guns, germs and steel - or how the advent of farming influenced pretty much everything to do with modern history.

Afghan Star, 2009. Great film about an American Idol-type program in Afghanistan. Lots of interesting and affecting cultural and sociopolitical information.

Dark Days, 2000. It's about homeless people in an abandoned subway tunnel in New York City. It's like diving into an alternate universe. It's sad, but it's got an uplifting ending.

"Senna," about the life and death of world champion Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna. I am reliably told that you don't need to know anything about racing to like it. (I was a fan of Senna in the McLaren-Honda days and cried buckets.) It's entirely composed of original footage: no talking heads or re-enactments.

I just watched "George Harrison: Living In the Material World" and thought that was really interesting. It's very long, though, so you do need to really like George.

Babies (that's the one following the four babies, right? fucking adorable)

Jesus Camp (just saw this one a few days ago... very scary, watch with the lights on)

This Film is Not Yet Rated (that title is either "film" or "movie", can't remember)

Miss Representation

A while back Netflicks had a good one about the early-1900's red light district of New Orleans, It was interesting, well done and actually involved more things than people would expect [some famous founders of Jazz came out of being panio players at the brothels, etc.]

I don't remember what it was called though, sorry.

"To Live is Better Than to Die" (好死不如濑活着)

A documentary about the AIDS epidemic in rural China, as told through the story of an entire family that was infected through a plasma donation program. IT IS INCREDIBLY DEPRESSING.

"Please Vote For Me"
A third-grade class in Beijing is running elections for class president. They are adorable.

"The Gate of Heavenly Peace"
PBS-produced documentary giving one of the most comprehensive and neutral (well, as neutral as you can get considering) overviews of the events leading up to the Tian'anmen Square incident, including interviews with survivors, relatives of those who were killed, and historical footage of the protests themselves. Everybody knows about Tank Man, but this documentary will tell you what went on in the months before.

I saw Sir, No Sir! (2005) quite a few years ago, but it's still one that I remember for being enlightening, interesting, AND conveyed with a more measured tone than I'd seen from a lot of documentaries before and since.

I recently saw Terms and Conditions May Apply, which is about the user agreements people agree to when you sign up for websites. It talks about how your user information is used and sold and why websites don't have a problem with selling your information. There's some Big Brother government stuff too.

I also second Blackfish.

Also Cropsey, it is a bit creepy though, Pink Ribbons, Inc. and Tapped.

The Great Happiness Space. It's about Japanese host clubs, specifically male ones. What I liked about it is that it led you through different ways of thinking, different reasons. Why the hosts pretended to love women, and what they thought of those women; why the women came for it, and what it might say about them--and what it didn't. It offers some surprises, and while I think it kind of lacks focus, it is pretty fascinating.

Dear Zachary. It's a letter to a murdered man's son, directed by his friend. It's on Netflix and YouTube for free, and it's very heartwrenching. However, I suggest you don't read up on it first. The documentary introduces events procedurally, so you see how the family of the father would have felt, and so on, and it's very effective.
