Does anyone have that clip of Cheryl from Archer talking about her fireman fantasy? I feel it would be applicable in this situation.

Guess for every abuser there is someone waiting to be abused. Sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is news to you?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Did you not know this? How do you think abusers stay in business?

NAYRT

Ana Mardoll put this a lot more succinctly than I could, so I'm going to quote her and provide a link to her longer explanation of why abusive fantasy characters actually attract people.

"I have never heard anyone seriously speculate that the popularity of femme fatales in fiction means that all men secretly yearn for an abusive relationship; yet [...] I have heard the meme that all girls wish to be abused more times than I can count. This is a failure of understanding the difference between fantasy and reality, and it is a "failure" that conveniently props up existing misogynistic narratives about how women who stay with abusers stay because they secretly want to be abused rather than because they are groomed (by both their abuser and the larger society) to stay with their abuser, and because society does not empower them to leave. This is a comforting lie we tell ourselves because it's easier to blame abuse victims than acknowledge that we are failing them."

"I don't like real gore as much..."

The "as much" in that sentence concerns me!

Well, if you enjoy gore, you enjoy gore.

As for the Mountain: no, it irks me. Not because of the actor - but they recast him 3 damn times and he looked nowhere similar to the previous one. Like seriously - how are shpow watchers even supposed to know it's the same person?

I felt that way about Daario. I was so damn confused as to who the new actor was supposed to be until someone told me outright haha.

I'm still confused about Daario myself, tbh. I'm warming up to this one, but I'm not thrilled.

Show watchers might have missed him in the second season with Tywin but I think him being called 'Clegane' and having Sandor tell Arya about the burns again would be enough to let them know that he's the same guy from the first season.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-06-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it sort of sucks if you don't know it's the same guy.

I will never watch that fight scene again. And I honestly don't remember who the previous Mountain actors were so I didn't even notice the recasting. Oops.

The new Mountain is kinda hot and that's saying something for me because I don't usually go for the huge types. But I still didn't enjoy the scene because I have too much imagination, such that gory scenes bother me because I project myself too hard into the character being tortured.

I consider my fictional gore threshold to be pretty decent but that scene was too much for me, I actually felt sick after it(I think it was a mixture of just how gruesome it was plus Oberyn screaming in agony). The mountain's actor is pretty physically impressive though, I'll give you that.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
This. I can deal with a lot of fictional violence, but this was the first time in ages that I felt physically sick, and for a while after watching it, too.
And I really have to say: It's one thing to portray brutality in a realistic way, but in a lot of cases, it makes me uncomfortable how much of a boner the people in charge have for detailed gore scenes.
nightscale: Starbolt (WoW: Deathwing)

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-06-14 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Same, I felt sick for a long time after and that doesn't happen very often.

I'm just really, really glad they decided to omit the part in the book where Tyrion vomits after seeing his face bashed in because I'm sure there were plenty of folks (like me) who would have actually vomited after that.
nightscale: Starbolt (WoW: Deathwing)

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-06-14 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man so am I, there is no question that I would have been sick too.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it too. Though I don't have a thing for the Mountain.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-14 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't read this secret properly because of the picture. That's probably worse than being really into gore, when it comes to what's socially acceptable.
