What about rape fantasies though? If you (figuratively) are someone who gets off on a rape fantasy roleplay, it's not saying you condone rape or that real rape is okay, or even that you don't know that rape is wrong.

How is it hypocrisy to say, "Look, in a real world situation if this happened it would be Not Okay, but this is something that gets me off sexually."? They're not advocating rape. They're not saying 'go out and rape people, it's all good, they'll like it eventually!'.

They're saying that they have a particular kink that they know is not something that they would really want to happen to them, so they engage in it in a controlled environment.

Then don't call it rape fantasy. The moment you give enthusiastic consent to something, it cannot be rape, by definition.

I think the wording is important. "But women have rape fantasies!" is used as an excuse by way too many scummy people, and even to non-scummy individuals, it cements the idea that sometimes rape is ok, because it's not like society at large views rape as seriously as it should. And I really don't get why ppl fight so hard to keep such a nasty term on for their kink.

But you're conflating two things, anon.

One of the characters could have a rape fantasy, in which case it is indeed consensual.

But it's also possible the writer/reader has a rape fantasy, one that centers around certain characters and not themselves, in which case it is possible they are reading/writing noncon in fanfiction.

Which is exactly why the noncon labeling exists.

I thought other anon was talking about irl roleplay, in which case I don't condone calling it rape fantasy. Considering that that's what most people who aren't in fandom will learn about, I think it's important to be concious of the wording. It's also probably more convenient to call it something else rather than "Rape Fantasy*" followed by a long list that specifies it's not actually rape.

People are way too willing to swipe their responsibility under the rug, even when writing fic, though.

That's why it's called rape fantasy. People who engage in it KNOW it's not rape. That's not the point. The point is putting yourself in someone else's hands and experiencing that loss of control while at the same time knowing you can stop it at any time with the right safe word.

It's still a fantasy about rape even if realistically the participants know that it's not remotely the same as real actual rape.

Wording is important, and that's why it's stressed that it's a fantasy. Some women do have rape fantasies. So do some men. Some men and women find the very idea of being so out of control abhorrent. There's nothing wrong with either end of that spectrum, and I just think how society views the severity of rape (which we agree is not as seriously as it should, whether it's males or females being raped) isn't as heavily tied to fictional portrayals of rape in fiction as people think it is.

I think it's more a matter of making sure people are educated about how something existing in a novel or movie or a game, whatever, isn't necessarily something the creator is advocating or saying is okay. Obviously entertainment doesn't exist in a vacuum, but there's also a certain degree of separation between fiction and reality that is very obvious to all except the few that have fiction/reality perception boundaries to begin with.

It seems like a good portion of this thread thinks euphemisms when discussing rape fantasies are unacceptable, though. And I don't know how clearly you can draw the line between the experience of a character you identify with being raped in-story and you arranging a fantasy role play with your partner? Though as someone who doesn't do either I can't be sure.

So wait. Just because some stranger I'll never meet and have never met has been raped (and no I'm not taking this lightly, rape is serious shit), I couldn't have a fantasy of being out of control?

How on earth does what someone else does in the bedroom privately affect anyone else? If they were to go up to someone and say, "Jeez, rape fantasy is cool, why aren't you okay with it!!" then that would be different and totally not okay, but there's nothing inherently wrong with a rape fantasy or any sort of sexual roleplay that's between consenting adults.

And as the other anon pointed out, what about people who engage in or read/write rape fantasy in order to heal? Are you going to tell a rape survivor that their method of healing isn't okay?
