rec me things similar to Noth & South please~

[personal profile] nan 2014-06-14 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
SO I recently watched the BBC drama (ngl, I watched it for Richard Armitage) and I really loved it a lot, which was a surprise to me since it is comprised of things I thought I hated. SO. I would like to watch more things similar to this (period piece, quietly heroic female lead, brooding, pining male lead) but I have no idea where to look for such things. Someone on tumblr recommended The Musketeers and while that's probably not quite what I'm after, I'm going to give it a shot.

So. If you've watched this show, can you please rec me things similar to it? Doesn't have to be in English; I'll take k-dramas that are similar in tone as well. :3

The Forsyte Sage... maybe. It's an ensemble cast period piece that has some similar elements. (It's one of my favorite shows so I like reccing it.)

Thank you! I'll definitely give it a shot. Is this the 2002 series?

Weeeeeell, North and South is basically Pride and Prejudice but the unions, so I would check out some BBC Austen adaptations. Especially the 1996 Pride and Prejudice.

Also, the most recent BBC Jane Eyre with Toby Smith as Rochester - I think of you liked North and South this one will be right up your alley, since Jane Eyre is a bit meatier, I guess, that Austen, and this one is a damn sexy adaptation if I do say so myself. Sexy is a ridiculous gothic period piece kind of way, you have to understand. but sexy nevertheless.

*but with added unions I meant to say, ugh

Oh good, I was hoping someone would mention some Austen adaptations~ There seems to be so many, I didn't know where to start. XD I'll definitely look into the recent Jane Eyre too.

Thank you! :3

I have no recs, I'm just going to hang out in this thread because I want similar stuff as well.

(And I adored North and South probably far more than I should have. Ugh, Richard Armitage. *shakes fist*)

Yes, good! I'm glad this thread will be helpful to more people than just me. XD

It was so surprisingly good, I was prepare to quietly suffer for ~4 hours but instead I was entertained. XD I was unprepared for that! I also really liked the woman who played Margaret, I think she did a very good job in her role. But damn, Richard Armitage. He was so good. ;3;

I like John Adams. The series is really about him and his wife, Abigail. Set in the American Revolution era. Great acting. Great costumes. Great direction. Here's the trailer.

I doubt it's quite what I'm after (they're already married!) but I've heard wonderful things about it. I'll definitely give it a look. :3

okay. Jane Austen is your go-to for period pieces. "The" Jane Austen adaptation is the BBC series with Colin Firth. Also give the latest P&P film a try. It's very different from the BBC series, but it has one of the best character castings for Jane I've ever seen.

There's also "Mansfield Park" which is a bit of a tearjerker. It's got the 'quietly heroic female lead' down to a T. also check out "Emma" (not so much a quietly heroic female lead, but very entertaining), and "Sense & Sensibility" (the one with Alan Rickman).

the classic is of course Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. There's a ton of adaptations floating around, some better than others.

some "kid" books I'd recommend that are period pieces:
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (there was a TV adaptation of this!)
Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter (there was a 1960s film adaptation by Disney)

other period recs: The Barchester Chronicles, and Cranford (based on the books written by Elizabeth Gaskell, same author who wrote North & South!)

another show you might want to watch is "Downton Abbey" (it's basically a 1920s soap opera, very entertaining. Maggie Smith is awesome in it!)

Netflix recommended me Mansfield Park after watching North & South so I'll definitely give it a shot. I love crying over things. ;3;

I've both read and watched Anne of Green Gables! So good, omg.

I've always turned away from Downton Abbey but that was before I realized how much I apparently like these things so yes, I'll be watching! Especially for Maggie Smith, ah!

Thank you so much, anon! <3

shit I forgot to add some Jane Eyre adaptations:

there was a 2011 film starring Mia Wasikowsa and Michael Fassbender

a 1983 BBC TV series starring Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton

and a 2006 BBC series starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens

plus a shit-ton of others. sooooo many adaptations, but these are the ones I'm most familiar with. personally, I actually liked the 1983 adaptation the best, even if it is dated.

The 1983 BBC "Mansfield Park" is very good; more modern adaptations have tended to make Fanny Price feisty. Shudder.

The 1982 Ivanhoe is a bit earlier than the OP's preferred period, but Rebecca is as quietly heroic as anyone could wish.

The recent movie Belle is really good and combines the same period piece + political plot/subplot.

There's also the recent Dickens' adaptations of Bleak House and Little Dorrit. Both phenomenal.

I also really liked Wives and Daughters (1999). The novel it was adapted from was written by the same woman as North and South.

Also also, Cranford (2007). It doesn't focus as much on the romance angle, but it does have its share and I love it.

None of these include brooding men as much as North and South (Armitage has a very special level of "brooding"), but yeah. Little Dorrit comes close-ish? The main male leads of Bleak House and Wives and Daughters are just simply good people, which is nice to watch in its own regard.

dude, yes, Bleak House & Little Dorrit, how could I forget?

Dickens is great for angst.

If you don't hate supernatural stuff and a very arbitrary interpretation of several gothic classics, you might like "Penny Dreadful".

I've had several people tell me Penny Dreadful is right up my alley so I've been meaning check it out. :3

Other people have rec'd other things but there's a couple of kdramas you might like?

Sungkyunkwan Scandal is a period-fusion type drama, with a heroine who disguises herself as a boy...so she can study! Yay! 'quietly heroic' probably fits her rather well, and I really like the male lead for being repressed/piney/broody but in an entirely undouchy way (which is rare in kdramas). It's not solely a drama, it has some cartoony Korean-style humor as well, but I loved all the characters and it didn't fall apart in the last episodes like a lot of kdramas do. :D

NOT a period piece, but with a mood/atmosphere you might like is 49 Days. I don't know how to describe it...basically the sweet but rather silly heroine gets a second chance at life (the 49 days of the title), and if during that time 3 people unrelated to her each cry 'one sincere tear' over her she gets to come back to life. The male lead is SUCH a woobie and the whole thing is both depressing and subtly uplifting. One of my favorite kdramas.

Whenever people mention this show, my mind always goes straight to that civil war mini series from the 80s with Patrick Swayze and it takes me a minute to figure out what the heck everyone's talking about with Richard Armitage, etc.

The Timothy Dalton Wuthering Heights.

*swoons*

tons of dickens novels have been filmed as well, so those would probably appeal.

Richard Armitage was smoking hot in that. *sigh* The actress who played Margaret was amazing as well. You might consider reading the book, it's not too bad in terms of language/style and contains a lot more Thornton feels, haha.

Other movie/miniseries recs:

Pride and Prejudice 1995 - I don't care for the 2005 version, myself. Hard to beat Colin Firth for his melty-eyed stoicism or Jennifer Ehle for her spirited intelligence.

Wives and Daughters 1999 - another Elizabeth Gaskell adaptation. Less brooding/pining, but a nice heroine who's a budding science geek

Sense and Sensibility - both the 1995 film with Emma Thompson and the 2008 miniseries are good. Different stylistic takes on the story, but both Eleanors are great!

Wow, I must be a period drama junkie, because I have seen all of these (English) shows people have mentioned.
