white elephants

In your most humble of opinions, what is the worst commonly given gift you can receive? And by commonly given, I mean like gifts people are more likely to give. So, less rabid rhino filled with bees and more like a fruit basket.

Personally, I hate it when people give me plants. To me it says, "Here, have a new responsibility that you did not want or ask for." I always end up killing the plant because I can't be bothered. I don't want a new hobby, thank you.
I can see if you were giving a plant to a gardener but your average joe? Just don't.

Scented candle.

Thanks, but I have electricity, and don't want my house smelling like funk for the next few days.

Give it to someone who smokes pot.

foods i've repeatedly said i don't like (it's ok if the person giving the gift doesn't know). like licorice or candied fruit.

hair and skin products. i never use any of this stuff.

Crappy scented lotion. "Great, lotion that makes my hands stink and doesn't actually make them softer."

Bath stuff. "Ooh, oddly-scented goos and powders that coat your skin! Because I was just thinking that the thing that's missing from bathing is something that makes you feel like you need to shower again right afterwards!"

To me, bottle of wine. I live at home with my parents and among their circle of friends, it's the adult gift to give.

My dad and sister don't drink, my brother doesn't drink wine and my mom will have one glass and call it a night.

We currently have 13 bottle of wine in my house and that's just what we've gotten in the last year. I host wine parties with friends because it's the only way I can get rid of so many bottles at once.

Jewelry. My mother insists on making me "pretty", even thought we never share tastes on what is "pretty", and I repeatly told her the last few years I didn't want anything girly nor costly.

Shower/bathing stuff; thanks for presuming you know what I'd like to smell pungently of, and also suggesting that I need to wash more!

Any skin products. Because they're usually from the dollar store and cause major rashes.

Soap. Half the time it's lavender scented, which means I'm allergic to it.

The worst? Clothing. Cause chances are that a) you won't like it or b) you will but it won't fit. And exchanging gifts is always a pain.

Re: white elephants

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Soap/bodywash/lotion sets (and sundry other grooming products). I have a contact allergy to the synthetic dyes they use in those things, and to lavender oil, which shows up in "natural" products a lot.

See's candy. I hate it and it's always what people give out.

rhino with bees? he. Giving plants is evil. The next step is what, gifting of animals?

I'm not too hot on sweets and electronic devices.

I personally hate it when people give me food, because it basically means I'll have to either eat it or it's a waste, and eating is unpleasant for me nowadays. :P (And at the moment I'm on a restricted diet to try to cure some health issues, so I can't eat practically anything anyway.) Aside from that, I don't really know what gifts are "common"...

Re: white elephants

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Bars of soap. I don't really mind any liqied soaps, but nobody in my house ever uses bars of soap anymore and it seems to be a popular gift.

Perfume. Unless I specifically want a scent, don't give me a random one as a present - I get migraines from most perfumes.

Books. I really hate getting random books as a present. I am incredibly picky. Also, most people only give me our country's language translation and ... nooooo.

Also: Stuff I liked several years ago but have told them time and time again that I don't like them anymore - it somehow doesn't get through all the time.

Novelty garbage of any sort. My home has an aesthetic, thanks. (or at least tries to)

Most of the time I'd rather not receive a physical object as a gift anyway. I'm not big into material possessions.

this is gonna make me sound like an ass...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
...and maybe I am, but I'm a teacher and most of the gifts my students (that is, their parents) give me are just... things I have no need for or interest in. A nice card would suffice for teacher appreciation week, at least if you plan to give me a plant or an ugly photo frame or off-flavoured candy or nail polish in weird colors (not only do I not wear nail polish, if I did it wouldn't been baby-poop green). If the child makes it that's one thing-- I keep all the things the children make. But if you go to a store and drop $20 on a box of raspberry-banana flavoured chocolates, you've just wasted $20 :p

Perfumes, soaps, lotion, that kind of thing. It's not that I don't ever like them, but even if I happen to dig the scent I have eczema and so it might break me out. I only use soap and lotion for sensitive skin, so if I get anything else...it's not going to be used.

"Decoration" for my home other than candles or stuff that's very in my style range.

Fashion. I really don't care about some skirt or blouse or whatever, it's 99.9 percent of the time not going to look good on me anyway. I'll take all the standard socks, underwear or pantyhoses though.

On the plant thing though, this is one of the reasons I love cacti so much. Looking a bit down because I forgot to water it for a month? No problem, better for it anyway. It's a bit cold, even less watering it can hibernate together with me. Give me all the cacti and succulents, but please leave that flowery stuff at the door it will die horribly anyway.

An electric shawl. Literally, a shawl you plug into the mains and it heats up.

First off, yes, I'm in a wheelchair and I feel the cold, but I'm not so old I want to wear a shawl. Plus, the problems with my arms means I can't put a shawl over my shoulders anyway, so that thing can stay in the box until I give it away.

I don't like getting plants either, or flowers. And any kind of bath-salts/bath stuff, shower stuff is fine but I never have baths so it's just a waste to get me anything like that.

Those baking gift sets you can get at walmart around christmas. I like cooking so I keep getting them and they're awful. Cheap, bland-tasting mixes with an attached bread loaf pan/mini cast-iron skillet/painted tin recipe card box/mug/oven mitt/jar that's either too small, too specific, or breaks to easily to be of any real use.

Plus I already have a bunch of everything so they're just gifts of clutter at this point.

Food. I have a ton of allergies and the people who I know on the level of 'impersonal gifts like foodstuffs' don't know that and tend to assume it's okay to give absolutely anyone food with nuts in it.

Anything that's imposing their tastes on you. Like, 'I know you like x, so I know you'll love y!' from a person who has no idea that y only superficially resembles x, or in fact doesn't really resemble x at all.

Also, never get someone a book unless you know 1) they want that specific book, 2) they like books by the same author--not A book by the same author, multiple ones, or 3) you know them really well and know their specific tastes. I could say the same for video games, movies, etc too.

...Basically what I'm saying is that one year I got Eragon as a gift because I'm 'into fantasy.' At least no one's ever given me a Twilight book because I'm 'into vampires.'

I bought an orchid for my mom because I know she loves them and always had trouble keeping them alive. I saw a display at the grocery store for orchids that were easy to maintain, and bought one. She was delighted, and 3ish years later, she still hasn't killed it!

In general, though, yeah I can see where you're coming from and I wouldn't buy someone a plant unless I knew they wanted it.

Um, for me? Personalized stuff. I guess because I'm picky and want to decide that stuff for myself. When I graduated from high school a family friend gave me a monogrammed towel. I don't really like monogrammed stuff and didn't use it a lot (I used the towels that came with the freshman linen set I bought). Once my mom gave me a set of stationery with my name on it and I have never use it bc I thought it was ugly and didn't want to represent myself with it. :/
