Also it wasn't advertised anywhere near as much as the other games (I casually enjoy the series but I didn't really know about it for a while) and the reviews are much more mixed than, say, Assassin's Creed 4 or even Assassin's Creed 3.
This would be more valid if one of the main games had a female protagonist and the sales dropped in a big way (though I would argue that has much more to do with sexism of the player base) but Liberation is hardly comparable to the rest of the series.

People do that with every game, though. Every time a game with a female protagonist sells poorly it turns into "oh, games with female protagonists sell poorly...," even though there are so many games with male protagonists that sell terribly, too, and they never take into account marketing, game quality, etc.
