Eh. I'm done with this excuse. It should be common sense.

I agree. People don't realize that video game companies are a business. You can cosplay, draw fanart and write fanfic about female video game characters all you want but if you aren't buying the games and the official tie-in merchandise, video game companies aren't going to make more games with them. They aren't making money. And that's the bottom line. They have to make money in order to stay in business. They aren't a charity.

Maybe if they had put Aveline's game on a real platform and not the stupid portable one that even Sony barely supports, it would have sold.

I just got into a huge argument about this with someone

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sick of people bringing this one game up as the sole reason we don't get any other playable female characters. Because 1. how many games with male playable characters have failed, and yet they never stop making more and 2. this game was a vita exclusive and people are not going to go out and spend a buttonne of money on a crappy system just to play one game.

Now you might point out that it recently was re-released for download, and you would be right! But you know how I found out about that (just yesterday, in fact)? Because dudebros saying the exact same thing your secret said, with additional "so sit down and shut up/go back to the kitchen/stop your bitching" comments.

The advertising for this game and it's re-realease sucked. The game isn't that great (I bought it for my 360 yesterday when I found out about it, and I'm not impressed, but I'm going to keep playing it because I'm starving for female playable characters in games like this). I could go on but I've lost interest in this rant. Bottom line, you're an idiot. Good day to you.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Bros and neckbeards still rule the gaming industry and fandom. If they thought the majority of players were going to buy a game featuring a woman, we would get more games featuring women. The amount of women buying and playing the "hardcore" AAA titles are most likely a very small minority.

Eh, I'm not really bothered by the lack of female protagonists in Unity.

That being said - their excuse of "women are harder to animate, it would have taken us much longer" is total BS and people are right to call em out on it.

And Liberty was originally portable only, so that's why me (and a lot of the regular fanbase) had no interest in it. You can't compare that to a real X-Box/Playstation game.

Yeah I'm sure that's it, and not it being exclusive to a system that few people own.

Dumb or trolling?

If Liberation had come out on a console instead of a handheld, I would have gladly gave Ubisoft my money. (Even though I hear the game isn't all that good.) Yes they later re-released it on LIVE, PS Network, etc, but seeing as I can't download it that doesn't help me much. (Plus, it seems they didn't advertise it much. I bet many people never even knew it had been re-released.)

And their reasons are still shit, imo. Like I said yesterday, I still think the game looks good, but if they just didn't want to 'bother' with making a female protagonist they should've said so. As always with Assassin's Creed, I imagine there's some non-playable female assassins running around, and if they can animate those characters I imagine they could've put some effort into expanding those animations so people could actually play as a woman.

[personal profile] glo_unit 2014-06-15 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
In addition to the it being a Vita exclusive for a long time, reviews wise at least it seems to not be nearly as good as the main series. While women led games need to be successful for more companies to be willing to make more them then. It is kind of shitty to blame a game that was on an unpopular system, and ported much latter, and was average at best, failure on the fact that it had a female protagonist.

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2014-06-15 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I fully plan to buy it when it gets a price drop during a sale on Steam (it'll probably be the first and only Creed game I actually finish). But I wasn't going to buy a Vita to play it when it first came out, and nobody else was, either. You can't basically sabotage a game's accessibility and quality (being that the Vita's graphics didn't remotely deliver the graphics Creed is known for on mainstream platforms) in comparison with every other entry in the series then say "hah, it didn't sell, that's proof nobody likes female protagonists". That's a self-fulfilling prophecy if there ever was one.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No one owns a vita. Were people suppose to buy a game they wouldn't be able to play?
writerserenyty: (Default)

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2014-06-15 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it was a side game (and not part of the series proper) and originally only on Vita? I don't have a Vita, so I didn't buy it. It's now been given an HD release on PC, which is great, but it's been out for 6 months, and so that was probably not taken into account when they were considering the game.

Also it wasn't advertised anywhere near as much as the other games (I casually enjoy the series but I didn't really know about it for a while) and the reviews are much more mixed than, say, Assassin's Creed 4 or even Assassin's Creed 3.

This would be more valid if one of the main games had a female protagonist and the sales dropped in a big way (though I would argue that has much more to do with sexism of the player base) but Liberation is hardly comparable to the rest of the series.

But they didn't put it out on a platform that I owned. So instead I picked different games that had female-playable characters that were on platforms I owned.

[personal profile] greenvelvetcake 2014-06-15 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, you know, the facts that it was originally for the Vita, barely advertised for its release on a real console, and didn't score well critically. But I'm sure it's just because no one wants female protagonists.

here's my copy of the game, do I still have the right to complain about Ubisoft's excuse?

for the record, this game was shelved to the Vita initially, a system that did very poorly over here, and also recieved very little marketing. It's no surprise not a lot of people knew about it. The game mechanics on the Vita version were also not very well done and sometimes downright annoying (pickpocketing with the rear touchpad and having to hold up letters to a bright light wherever you were)

I love how people are clinging onto the supposed 'excuse' that it's too hard to animate women in a game. Hasn't anyone looked at the fact that having a female assassin would be historically inaccurate? But no, people want to shove women in the game because they want to make it more PC. Fuck that shit.

lol well with the bullshit surrounding their new game, i sure as hell won't be giving them any of my money

i think the thing that this company doesn't realize is that it's easy to get your old fans to keep buying your shit and that the real additional profit is in drawing in new fans who are more casual about gaming and hear good things from people they know about whatever game you're marketing. which is why i think the "but the real fans don't want it!!" argument is bullshit in the light of "IT'S BUSINESS" because the "real fans" were probably going to buy it anyway. way to alienate a huge portion of your potential audience, ubisoft, really well done.

They sent it to die on a portable nobody owns or wants. If that's their justification for "people don't want female protagonists!" then fuck them.

It wouldn't even be a good justification if the Vita WAS popular, either.

I have no idea who this character is (my daughter plays AC, but i don't pay much attention, it makes me dizzy) but holy fuck.

She is *hot*. So hot.

Yeah, i got nuthin' else.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if it had originally come out on main consoles instead of a crappy little handheld reject system. Sure, the dlc was available MUCH later and I got it, but I doubt Ubisoft cares much about those sales compared to when the game was just released.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
tbh I couldn't care less if we never get a game with a female assassin because I am shallow and enjoy my hot male assissin eyecandy. Altair, Ezio, and Connor were all fine as hell and I enjoy staring at them on my screen.
