dear OP, I'm really sorry for all the hate you get in this thread. I completely understand what you mean.
To be watching a show and getting the feeling that they didn't create these characters for story reasons, but because they had an "inclusivity checklist" that they went through.
poeple freak out when there's one woman/one POC/whatever in a show because "token/eyecandy/blah", but when a show's *nothing but that*, it's suddenly okay? ick.
It's cool to have more diversity on tv, but if you see the wrong motives shining through, that just ruins it.

+1. I want to see more minorities on TV myself, but it's very obvious when they're just fishing for the inclusivity points, especially when the creators of the show are, to my knowledge, all white(/skinny/etc.) themselves. It's one thing when it's something like the Cosby Show (where it's the brainchild of a black comedian, and all the actors, since it's live-action, are black--so actual POC are having a space and voice in their own representation), but when it's white people who want to look better-than-thou and inclusive by drawing literal fat purple people... well, it's disingenuous, mostly. It's disingenuous to act like you have a stake in the representation of these groups.

Wow, you're even more of an SJW piece of shit than most of the commenters to this thread. You've got some gall telling white people that they can't write about non-whites without it being "disingenuous."

i'm curious: what would you consider an acceptable "story reason" for including poc, women, and fat characters in a show

As deeply flawed as Korra is, I think an anon upthread made a good point about how it doesn't come off nearly as calculated and pandering as SU does. And it has even MORE representation than SU. Some stories just feel more natural. Korra may suck but it oozes sincerity. Steven Universe just feels so blandly designed to appeal to a certain crowd.

I WOULD AGAIN LIKE TO REITERATE, all of this would be fine if the show was good. Or BETTER at least. Because the puppets aren't entertaining, so people start focusing on the strings holding them up instead. And what a shock, most of the creators have a presence on places like Tumblr. WHO. COULD HAVE GUESSED.
