Hm, I think it sort of depends.

It's perfectly okay to not find someone attractive.

That being said, I've seen some comments about some actors' appearances', including Cumberbatch, that are just mean and vile. If you wouldn't say it about a random person on the street, you shouldn't say it about a celebrity, either. They're actual people.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but saying you don't find someone attractive doesn't fall into the category of mean and vile remarks, and shouldn't be treated as such.

Disclaimer: I find BC incredibly hot, but I think it's more to do with his voice than appearance.

I 100% agree. There's nothing wrong with saying you don't find someone attractive, but when people start name-calling and being cruel about it...I'm out. Celebrity or not I don't like seeing people insult each other, especially for something that person has no control over.

Plus...this topic is old, and we've heard it a thousand times, and why are we even still talking about it? (Yet here I am, commenting on it anyway. Guess I should know better.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. Some people say it in really mean ways.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
But part of their "job" is to be attractive. Any actor gets a lot worse and brutally honest assessment of their looks any time they try out for a part.

PS - I find BC quite unattractive, but since I've also never seen him in anything I can't comment on whether I'd like him as an actor.

Agreed, some people go way overboard with it.

Yeah but you will also get slammed in a minute if you talk about how attractive he is. The mere topic of his face is an immediate wank bomb either way and I wish people would just shut up about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Just shut up about it is right. I am so sick of this topic, lol

That's a great idea: we should just stop talking about BC's face.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This right here is why I don't like most TV fandoms. Since when is how hot or not hot the actor is the point? It's the character (who is not the actor or vice versa), the story, that sort of thing. Half the time I don't even really know the actors' names.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
*coolstorybro*

So my mom actually got mad at me for not thinking Bendersnick Cummerbund is unattractive. She and my niece were watching Sherlock and gushing over him. I said something like, "He's a great actor, but definitely a bit odd looking." She got all scathing, like "You would."

LOL. No other actor or physical preference or anything has inspired that kind of comment from my mom.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-16 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this story.

I'm amused by this because if we traveled back to the mid-90s and I had a similar reaction to Jimmy Smits, my mother would respond in the the way.

The fact of the matter is that he DOES have some unfortunate angles, but I don't see a need to over-gush or completely bash him. Some people just want to do a thing. I just appreciate the attractive angles and try not to mention the not-so-great ones, even though I can't even really count myself as a fan or a hater of his.

A friend of mine used to call him Benedict Cumberbatch-well-I-think-he's-attractive. I never said anything about his looks, but maybe she was reading my thoughts.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think maybe some people are a little over-sensitive to criticism of him because it can get kinda vitriolic. I don't mind if people say "I don't find him attractive", but people going on and on about his his face is weird and they don't get why he's attractive does get on my nerves.

It's like. People have different tastes in other people. It's a thing that happens. I don't get why people go gooey over Brad Pitt, but I'm not gonna call them weird because their tastes don't match mine.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Brad Pitt is so fecking BLAND.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly no one can dislike things on the internet anymore. Apparently it makes you a superbitch.

I don't find him attractive either.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, though, that with all things a lot of people like, the OTT haters tend to be particularly bitchy and viscious, which in turn causes a kneejerk reaction from fans when someone just neutrally says they don't like *insert popular thing here* because the OTT reaction has become an expected thing.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-06-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I only found him attractive in STITD.

*shrug*

However, his best voice use was Smaug.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I just find his face completely fascinating. Like, that faces can occur in that configuration is a testament to the diversity of nature. It's like he just kinda got put together, like a Wii avatar. That's pretty cool I guess.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-19 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
At first I didn't get everyone's fascination with him, then I saw his skills and heard his voice and BAM: he suddenly started looking great too. Talent and the way he carries himself is sexy.
Still, I perfectly understand if he's not everyone's cup of tea. Heck, wasn't for me either at first. He's not conventionally good looking (which I personally think is good since that makes him stand out).
I too don't get the butthurt whenever someone says they aren't attracted to him. Wtf? Having your own taste doesn't make you shallow. Of course, it's totally different to be nasty and go mocking his looks since that's not something you should do in any case! Not cool.
