Hm, I think it sort of depends.

It's perfectly okay to not find someone attractive.

That being said, I've seen some comments about some actors' appearances', including Cumberbatch, that are just mean and vile. If you wouldn't say it about a random person on the street, you shouldn't say it about a celebrity, either. They're actual people.

Disclaimer: I find BC incredibly hot, but I think it's more to do with his voice than appearance.

His voice is the one thing I like about him.

True but in regards to this guy I have hardly ever seen anyone just say "I just don't find him attractive" particularly in fadnomsecrets! They are always "he's so hideous/looks like an alien/so fucking ugly".

I 100% agree. There's nothing wrong with saying you don't find someone attractive, but when people start name-calling and being cruel about it...I'm out. Celebrity or not I don't like seeing people insult each other, especially for something that person has no control over.

Plus...this topic is old, and we've heard it a thousand times, and why are we even still talking about it? (Yet here I am, commenting on it anyway. Guess I should know better.)

Yes, this. Some people say it in really mean ways.

But part of their "job" is to be attractive. Any actor gets a lot worse and brutally honest assessment of their looks any time they try out for a part.

PS - I find BC quite unattractive, but since I've also never seen him in anything I can't comment on whether I'd like him as an actor.

No, it is not. It's their job to bring a story to life. If they are cast as an attractive character and you personally don't find them attractive, that doesn't even mean they were miscast. Your taste is not a general yardstick.

You are wrong. There are thousands of people out there who could do an incredible, beautiful job of bringing a story to life but if they don't fit the physical description of the role will never get the chance. Part of an actor's job is to be as attractive as the role calls for. The physical matters in show biz. Whatever an individual thinks of BC's looks, obviously casting directors appreciated them and thought he'd attract fans.

Have you ever tried out for a role? They pick you apart from head to toe if they even tell you why you did or didn't get it.

I did when I was younger. Didn't get told shit, so I don't know what that says about me, haha. :)

But, there are plenty of people who successfully act and who aren't attractive at all. Looks aren't necessarily the job, although looks can help you get the job.

Looks get you in the door for a role. They want people of a "type." So if you are a short pudgy guy you don't go for the romantic lead. You go for the humorous best friend. So before you even try out you are sorted by your appearance. So not necessarily good looks, but looks. Have you seen the descriptions of the type of actors they want when they put out those casting sides? It gets very specific.

I disagree that being attractive is an actor's job, but unfortunately most casting agencies, esp. here in the US, do think that. I continue to be inspired by the British shows that have people on them that look like real people and not the cookie-cutter clones Hollywood gives us. And oddly enough, I can find a character and show interesting without it being full of people I find sexy. Hell, it's even better IMO and not just because of diversity in body type and ethnic representation and all that. I gave up on The 100 because all the young men looked alike and hell if I could figure out who was who most of the time. And if the women hadn't had different hair colors, they would be practically clones, too. That's fine on Orphan Black where it's the point. Anywhere else, it's pretty damn ridiculous.
