Think you're overreacting a little bit. Or possibly trolling. This isn't any worse than the naked baby pictures or the stupid cutesy animal costume you had to wear as a baby.

Now, parents who name their kids Sephiroth or Vegeta, gods help them...

I have to admit I always cringe at naked baby pictures. I worked in a photo lab, and while I wasn't under any legal obligation to report anything (including the photos I saw of teenagers doing coke/drinking like sailors and photographing the aftermath), I found myself wondering why anyone would do this (including my parents).

I think there are exploitative ways to do this and geuinely positive ones. My grandpa took photography in the army and he documented all sorts of things about our family life from then on. So it wasn't something I felt singled out with as a small child. And he took some amazing pictures. There's one of me completely naked, sitting on a block and holding a toy violin as if I'm about to play it, just ... bathed in sunlight. I like it. The existence of those pictures has never embarrassed me. But then, being naked isn't a taboo in my family. On the other hand, I really appreciate that my mom listened to me and put her foot down about not letting people take pictures of me when I didn't want to be in pictures. I got chicken pox when I was ten or so and the blotches were apparently really interesting looking (they made patterns), but I was miserably sick and felt hideous. No pictures were taken. This was the right thing to do. Twenty years later, I still think so.

Because naked babies are cute. Your one year old having a blast in a bubble-bath is *adorable* and you want to share it with all the family! Unless you're seeing genitals, you can't even tell the sex of little babies, so...who cares?

Yeah, I hide that shit when it comes up on Facebook. I find it annoying at best.

Boo hoo. I like to share my family's joys and fun times. If you don't, why bother friending in the first place? I don't friend people i don't care about.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Because they occasionally provide worthwhile links or provide fodder for my media analysis research project.

It's actually pretty fascinating seeing what kinds of memes, falsehoods and sheer absurdities people I know end up sharing. Every once in a while it's too much to stomach (like seeing my US citizen friends share things from Britain First), but most of the time I get new research material that allows me to maintain my researching skills while verifying/debunking things that get passed around.

That's such a black and white response. I'm not going to de-friend someone I've known and loved since elementary school (I was a bridesmaid in her wedding, even!) just because I don't give a shit about her new baby. I don't like babies, period. I still want to know what's up with her, as a human being, so I'm going to keep her as a friend. But naked babies in the bath are only adorable to a select few people and I am not one of them, so I filter those posts out.

As the anon who originally posted about not liking naked baby bath pictures, I wholeheartedly approve of this response.

Uhhh... I understand feeling uncomfortable, but for the most part, there's nothing dirty about naked baby photos to warrant reporting.

There was a news story a few years back about a photo lab employee from Walmart (or some other place, don't remember), and this person reported a couple after viewing their photos, because some of them contained bathtime moments of their toddler children. They were concerned because genitals were showing in one or two of the pictures.

Those parents had their kids taken away from them on allegations of sex abuse or something similar. I think they got them back, but they definitely had a fight on their hands.

I remember that. Didn't help that the media made the father out to be some sort of child molestor for it.

I'm way more concerned by anyone who thinks there's anything weird or wrong with naked baby photos in the first place, tbh.

There is nothing sexual or naughty about a small child being naked. It's about as innocent as you can get. If your brain thinks it's wrong because nudity is sexual and therefore wrong... yeah, that's a little concerning.
