It sounds like you're mistaking your preference for what you think is genuinely superior (although I admit I'm not a fan of shrill cutesy voices either).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Um, yes? And you're not?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It think original works are generally better than their dubs which have script changes, the occasional butchering of Japanese names, and sometimes miss the Japanese context (subtitles do this too, but nowhere nearly as much as dubs). It's like saying that all the English dubs of Hong Kong action movies (or Bollywood movies or whatever) are genuinely superior than the original versions.

*to the original versions

Really? Japanese dubs don't occasionally, they ALWAYS butcher English and other foreign languages - especially those hilarious moments when the characters are actually -supposed- to be speaking English. Does that also bother you? And what's wrong with slightly adapting dialogue - that's really a part of translation, too (and, imo, more important than translating word for word is translating the real feeling and message, and if some Japanese context is lost to an audience that wouldn't even understand the reference anyway, and adapted in a way that the audience can at least understand the atmosphere of the scene, I think that's great). I'm not saying anime should be completely butchered in its English translations, but frankly, I don't think that's been acceptable in the industry since the 90s. And even then, it doesn't make it a bad dub.

PS - I speak Japanese, though it isn't my first language. True, though I can understand, I can't catch the nuances of the acting as well as I can in English, my native language. I'm sure you can't, either, unless you are a native-level Japanese speaker. But it doesn't take much Japanese ability at all to realize the obvious truth: Japanese voice acting has no more quality or talent than English voice acting, you're just more forgiving of horrible acting when you can't understand the language.

Also, what does this have to do with me hating Japanese "character" voices? Shrill girly voices, cutesy voices, adult women who play boys - I find this all really obnoxious, and it happens less often in English. Therefore, I prefer dubs.

can't say I've had to defend my position of preferring dubs over subs since I was at an anime convention back in high school lmao

It's not even a question of horrible acting or not, Japanese and English voice acting have completely different styles that are neither comparable nor compatible.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They are certainly comparable, while they are different. I'm just curious as to why you're saying this to me, and not any of the anons here who say they think the Japanese dubs are so much better, if they are just not comparable nor compatible?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Because you also mentioned the quality of the acting, which isn't always necessarily "terrible but you just don't understand it" but instead just stylistically so different that it's not just a language thing, but a whole different cultural/style aspect. Japanese voice acting lives through over-acting and BIG EMOTION - if you do the same in, say, an English dub it just sounds silly.

But if you want I can go and copy-paste my answer to everyone else's post as well, whatever.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
All voice acting depends on "over-acting", why you think that's a Japanese only thing boggles me. Of course quality can differ. I never said the quality of Japanese acting is worse, I said that fans who prefer subs wouldn't be able to tell if it was worse, anyway, and my point is that they are quick to judge English dubs, without realizing that Japanese acting isn't any better. And I've said I don't like "character" voices - and yeah, I speak Japanese, lived in Japan for years, and real people don't use those character voices. Why do I have to like them? They sound stupid. "Stylistic" isn't an automatic okay for anything. And I generally don't like boys/young men being voiced by women. Why does that get you so mad?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
But I'm not mad at all, you're the one who gets all excited about this. And no, the way overacting is done is not the same in those two languages. The 90s did the "let's imitate the way they do it" a lot and it ended in gems like "over 9000". As someone who understands a lot of Japanese and had some acting experience, I also know what I'm talking about. And of course normal Japanese people don't sound like anime VAs.

And I never said you had to like them - it probably got lost, but I basically agreed with you and only added that it's not just a matter of course"good" and "bad" but also of style. People often say "the dub is bad because it's not like the Japanese version" without understanding that, if done in the Japanese style of voice acting, it would sound much, much worse. But yeah, that probably wasn't very clear in my original comment.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude chill. You said that 90 percent of all English dubs are better than the original Japanese version. You do realize that is a controversial opinion?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
As opposed to the opposite...?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Go back to your anime conventions then you weeaboo.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
lol butthurt subs fan, I guess.. and I'm the weaboo?
