it actually active bothers me sometimes to be in a character's skin, but fact is there's a subset of people who really like it, which is why it's a genre that will keep existing.

Same! Someone writing about me as a character would be okay, but this feels as if someone was forcing a plot on me.

Exactly, I once read a smut fic in second person, and while it was with a character I was crushing on, it really rubbed me the wrong way, because it felt like it was supposed to be "me".

Fic in first or second person needs to be burned at the stake.

First person present tense doubly so.

I just don't really understand why people feel the need to write it.

Sometimes the source material is in those tenses and they want to stay close to it (Homestuck being a prominent example). Also, just plain stylistic choice.

Well, fair enough if it's the source material. But I'm mainly in TV/film fandoms and it's pretty prevalent there, too.

I did it once because I wanted to have tried it. It's an interesting exercise and people seemed to like the story enough that it probably worked. I wouldn't do it again though as it was really quite hard.

Fic in first person is the easiest thing I ever write. I crawl into the character's head and relate what I see and feel, and it comes alive. Some can get re-written in third person, but some lose the tightness I'm looking for, so first it stays. I adore action scenes in first/present as well.

I don't know how good of a writer you are, but what you just described here is pretty much the biggest problem with first person POV. So often it just feels like the author instead of the character.

nayrt

That's where the "in the character's head" comes in.

This goes extra for first-person fics with "'s POV" headers.
