it actually active bothers me sometimes to be in a character's skin, but fact is there's a subset of people who really like it, which is why it's a genre that will keep existing.

Same! Someone writing about me as a character would be okay, but this feels as if someone was forcing a plot on me.

I've never seen that before. It seems... really odd.

But then character/reader fic kinda creeps me out anyway, so I'm not in the best position to judge.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What, waa?

...Roleplay?

Some roleplayers play like that, but there really is fic like this, where the reader is theoretically a participant.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite. I enjoy the fill in blanks tbh. I can't stand it when they give skin or hair color or some stupid ass name.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The last time I read a reader/character fic, which admittedly was years ago now, it just used second person instead. Like a 'choose your own adventure' book. Which honestly makes more sense to me.

It took me a minute to figure out what they were saying...I still don't understand all of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I am very irrationally annoyed by this. It gives me such second-hand embarrassment.

Although, not so much for fics but those "imagines". They put a gif or a reaction gif of the subject and then "imagine" with dialogue with "y/n".

Or, two people in the gif looking upsettish or talking and they put "Imagine __ and ___ fighting over you." "I love (y/n) I'm not giving her to you!" etc. Uhgggggggg.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, do people do that??? I'm glad I haven't seen those... (def with you on the second-hand embarrassment!)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG I remember these!!! +1

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-06-18 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, it's not bad.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I find those kinds of fic to be legitimately creepy. They make me wonder about the mental health of the people who write and read them.

....seriously? And yet people who love to read dub-non/non-con fic are less so?

It just amplifies the amateurishness that was already intrinsic to the genre. Frankly, you need to stop reading fics on deviantArt.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I still don't understand this concept. Is this like a story but in 2nd person?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-17 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think instead of 2nd person (which is probably the most common way of doing it, as someone stated earlier), it's 3rd person...but with the details left blank so you can fill in yourself? Or something?

[personal profile] othellia 2014-06-18 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Huh... The only time I've ctrl+f/replaced a name was for an OC-centric fic who had a name that grated on me. Oh, and a fic that used xe/xir/xirself pronouns.

there're fics like that now???

[personal profile] ibbity 2014-06-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
People actually write fic like this? Bleah. Talk about being jerked out of the story.
otakugal15: (fucks)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-06-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's fun for fantasy purposes. I only read these types of fic every great once in a blue moon and usually when I'm very bored. Or horny.

First off, that is terrible construction. It's worse than all the terrible scene breaks in existence. I still don't know what that "(E/c)" in the second example is supposed to stand for.

Secondly, I avoid Character/Reader because I am here to see the canon characters interact with each other. I went through my Self Insert phase a long time before I got online and I think that I am a terribly boring character. I would hate to read about me (Mimi Sardinia may be interesting, when she's not me, but me behind the keyboard? Nope. I'm just a boring, fat, middle-aged near-hermit).

It's for a similar reason I am less than fond of interacting with First-Person RPers, because I feel comfortable RPing in Third Person, because it's not me interacting with people, it's Kizár, or Boromir. I just do the typing for them.

Yeah, I like xReader stories sometimes, but I hate those fill-in-the-blank spots. So intrusive and terrible. They look like sores. It's always the most unnecessary details, too. Instead of "(E/c) eyes," why not write "Your eyes"? The point is to self-insert, and the reader will tailor the details without those explicit directions. I'm sure it's a trend young writers copy from each other without thinking, but... bleh.

Oh, and I keep reading (y/n) as (yes/no).
