Dry scalp

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have dry scalp (not dandruff!) and I've always had it. :( Any advice? The weird thing is, my face tends to be super oily, so I don't know why the top of my head is so dry and itchy. I don't really use hot irons or blow dry my hair. It was recommended to me not to wash my hair every day - and I don't, I go for every other day, but the first 24 hours after showering are fine. It's the next day, when the rest of my hair become greasy, that my scalp gets itchy (whhyyy?). I feel like all the websites suggest these things which aren't even applicable to me.

My hairdresser recently suggested being sure not to get any conditioner near my scalp, so my scalp can produce "natural oils" - but I've been trying this for a few weeks and I feel itchier than ever. :(

Advice?

This may sound strange, but maybe try not to use conditioner at all? I've found my hair a lot more manageable since I stopped using conditioner and used only a little shampoo.

Also, try looking around for some skin-friendly oils (i.e. coconut oil, herbal oils, etc.) or a strong but scent-free body moisturizer and rub it into your scalp, just a bit after you shower (while your hair is still damp).

What's your hair texture like? It's very hard to advise without knowing -- how thick, how coarse, curly/straight, frizzy/limp, how fluffy/heavy, how long, how easy to get tangled, how greasy, etc?

My hair is pretty thick and wavy (and I'm Caucasian, if that means anything). I don't think it tangles easily, but it's pretty long (halfway down my back). I have "face framing" bangs, and those get pretty greasy by the second day (kind of clump together instead of looking soft). If were to guess, I'd say my hair is more heavy than fluffy, but then, it is long, so it might be tough to say. Does that stuff affect dry scalp (and treatment) though? I honestly had no idea.

Definitely, because it helps determine whether or not your hair can handle applications of light oil to your scalp and how much you need shampoo or conditioner and that sort of thing.

I would try both the ideas of the anon who recommends tea-tree oil. If that doesn't work, follow darkmanifest's ideas, and also see what happens if you only use shampoo a couple times a week. For your bangs, how about wash only your bangs everyday while you the shower or over the sink? Push your shower cap back and wash your bangs with a tiny bit of shampoo (but don't lather them down to your scalp) and rinse very well.

Maybe try light hair oils and pomade, with natural ingredients like jojoba oil, olive oil, and shea butter (or just the pure versions of those, if you prefer); not the heavy styling stuff, just the moisturizing products. Part your hair in sections and apply to scalp after you wash it. You can also try rinsing with cool water every day with only shampoo every other day, or rinse every day, condition-only every other day, and only shampoo a couple of times a week. It's the shampoo that wreaks so much havoc on a scalp, a lot of them strip hair like a motherfucker.

I've got a super-dry scalp and curly-kinky hair type, and I wash about once a week (twice in summer) and oil generously - right now I'm trying out different brands as I go. Keeps me from scratching myself bald, anyway.

That whole "don't wash your hair every day" adage is only applicable for some people. Some of us do need to wash our hair every day, so you might want to give that a shot and see if that makes a difference.

Try tea-tree shampoo or some other scalp treatment? And make sure to rinse very thoroughly. You could also try a weekly deep-conditioning treatment (leave it in for a bit while you shave/wash your body/etc.) and see if that helps. Also be sure not to scratch!

Do you shower in hot water? Like, constant hot water?

If so, stop that immediately, or limit it to one shower a month. Lower the temperature to warm. Something even as simple as the water temperature can strip the moisture from your skin and throw off the pH balance (hence why your skin is oily but scalp is dry).

At least start with that.

Next, what is the quality of your water? Do you have hard water? Consider a water softener, or some kind of chlorine/chloramine filter. It can help make your hair softer, and your skin not so crazy itchy.

Shampoos without sulfates/parabens/phthalates can help too, or just use baking soda/water mix followed by apple cider vinegar/water mix.

If you don't mind wasting food (nooooooooo!) I've heard that rubbing mayonnaise into your scalp and leaving it there for half an hour before rinsing it out can help too. Or some kind of egg solution. Or even avocado.

Redkin has a soothing scalp relief. It goes on the scalp. Also there's a scalp scrab, you can ask around. And maybe your shampoo and cond. formula irritates your skin? Just try some changes and see what it does.
