as another japanese american words like otaku are used the same derogatory way in japanese so no, not necessarily? what are you talking about

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they mean stuff like "kawaii desu" used ironically to mock weeaboos.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
so if i say that stuff in mocking parody of weeaboos im mocking my own culture instead of mocking weird people's obsessive weird version of it?

that makes no sense.

unless they're implying stuff like uguuuuuu iyannnnn seme-sama is like some kind of high japanese culture that we're supposed to respect and we're totally appropriating, 'cause. lol. that's like saying non-americans that say #yolo mockingly are disrespectin american culturezzz

I'm not the OP, but I'd assume they would expect another Japanese person to value their own culture. Whereas ... I've seen a weird mix of hostility towards weeaboos and hostility towards Japan in the way Americans shame other Americans for being enthusiastic about foreign media. You can't always tell if they're bashing because "this fannish behavior sucks" or because "this Japanese thing Americans are fans of is total trash." There's overlap. Sometimes a lot of overlap. And I think the defensiveness in these threads should tell you something about people not being entirely unaware of the overlap. They're just awfully defensive about it.

Ugh, hipster!weeaboos who "ironically" use weeaboo terms are so annoying. You're just as bad as the weeaboos (if not worse, since you're also hypocrites).
