Yeah, we think you should keep on thinking of Japanese as being "lesser", we've seen where letting you think of yourselves as equals or superior leads.

i wish it were that simple but it's sadly not. you can claim you're american and just american born in cali raised in LA all you like but when other people see you, they see your parents' culture because that's what makes you different. your family is steeped in it, you grew up with it, the trends, news, and everything else your parents follow is from 'home' which will always be 'home' and 'our land' even if they've lived here 20 years... its yours just as much as the american one is. maybe if you're 3rd gen or above, like your grandparents immigrated here and you had americanized parents, you're further from it, but if it's 'your parents' culture?' yeah, it's possible to be very part of both. a lot of the time you dont get a choice.

It always kind of bugs me because, sometimes (not all the time), it seems like the criticism is based on "Why are you interested in another culture's media, you freak?" rather the other reasons one could criticize weeaboo culture (like objectifying everything Japanese). I understand you feeling that way, OP.

You realize that mocking weeaboos generally means mocking the people who know ~5 words of Japanese and watch a lot of anime and think that is the entirety of and the crowning achievement of Japanese culture?

Trust me, as somebody who learns Japanese (and Chinese... and Korean...) the difference between someone legitimately code-switching and somebody using weeaboo-Japanese is painfully obvious.

Or are you of the crowd that thinks me learning Japanese is cultural appropriation?
