I took up a vegetarian diet a few years ago for Lent, in which I gave up ALL meats (incl. fish). Mostly b/c I worked in a kitchen at the time, and it... was a tempting job. I actually felt better, and after I'd gotten some blood work done after Easter, the doctor said my results were 'perfect', without even knowing I'd gone vegetarian for the past 40-odd days. Nowadays, I do eat meat on some occasions, but if given the options, I'll go with vegetarian options every time. Mostly because I like having the health benefits (though I do acknowledge there are some risks).

That said, I do agree that the portrayal of them in media is annoying at best. Granted, it doesn't exactly help that there's people like PETA out there who perpetuate some really bad stereotypes and thus sour the concept of meatless diets -whether they be for personal choice, ethical reasons, or health-related reasons- on most people. =T

Yeah, PETA activists are rare. A few vegeterians, that I know are very reasonable and don't try to turn people into vegetarians/vegans.

Yup. PETA are absolutely awful - they do have some useful resources on their site, but it's overwritten by their hideous campaigns. (Why the fuck would you go after POKEMON?) Basically every veg*n I know can't stand PETA - they're the worst example of animal rights I can think of.

And yeah, about health-related stuff. I freely admit that I do still eat a lot of junk and processed stuff, but two years after being vegan, my blood work is a whole lot better than it EVER was as an omnivore, including my iron levels and, hilariously, my B12. (Mostly because now I actually know what B12 IS, and intentionally pick out stuff fortified with it!)

Sure, there are junk food veg*ns who have a horribly misbalanced diet, but that's not exclusive. The Standard American Diet isn't exactly well-balanced, either!
