In primary school (first 7 years of schooling) I had a friend who was vegetarian because he hated meat. And that's what most of the vegetarians I meet are like.

Myself, I am not a vegetarian but I seem to have a vegetarian aura, based on how often people ask me or say "I thought you were vegetarian," just because I usually prefer the veggie option (it often has more flavor).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
some people assume I'm vegetarian because I don't like hot dogs. I just don't like hot dogs.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
With #1, if it's an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, I don't think there's any reason why it would be inherently less healthy than an omnivorous diet.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that depends on how reponsible parents are. You HAVE to actually research that stuff if you want to raise a healthy child.

Granted, it's not like omnivorous parents always give their children a well balanced, healthy diet either.

People think I'm vegetarian because I don't eat a lot of meat. I'm just not a big fan of meat, but I like it sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
People will ask me if I'm a vegetarian if we're eating out together and I order something that happens to not have meat in it, and I don't get it at all. Do they eat meat at every meal and think every non-vegetarian does too?

For me, it's texture thing. There are certain types/cuts of meats I just cannot eat, because my gag reflex won't allow it. Not that I dislike the taste, or what it comes from. Pretty much any fat or gristle, for example, or processed meat (like bologna). When I was a child, I rarely ate meat. I still don't like cooking it in my own house, because I have a problem with the lingering odor.

I haven't seen this trope very much, but I actually went to school with a kid exactly like that. His parents were like the quirky vegetarians who were powering their house with solar energy and gave him some weird New Age name. As the kid hit hi teens he's sneak off with us to have burgers at McDonald's. It happens.

I've been vegetarian for 30 years. If I had kids they could eat whatever they wanted, but the food I</> prepared for them would be vegetarian. It's really not difficult to eat healthily as a vegetarian if you know the basic food groups. It's not rocket science. Vegetarians are no more likely to poison their kids with junk than anybody else.

Where's the drama?

There are no problems with being vegetarian as a child when you have a balanced diet and the same applies for meat eaters.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What, that first one. They're risking their children's health by raising them vegetarian?

The OP is aware that there are literally millions of vegetarians in India, who have been from birth, and the population over there is just doing fine?

I took up a vegetarian diet a few years ago for Lent, in which I gave up ALL meats (incl. fish). Mostly b/c I worked in a kitchen at the time, and it... was a tempting job. I actually felt better, and after I'd gotten some blood work done after Easter, the doctor said my results were 'perfect', without even knowing I'd gone vegetarian for the past 40-odd days. Nowadays, I do eat meat on some occasions, but if given the options, I'll go with vegetarian options every time. Mostly because I like having the health benefits (though I do acknowledge there are some risks).

That said, I do agree that the portrayal of them in media is annoying at best. Granted, it doesn't exactly help that there's people like PETA out there who perpetuate some really bad stereotypes and thus sour the concept of meatless diets -whether they be for personal choice, ethical reasons, or health-related reasons- on most people. =T

I think it's stupid to lump vegetarian and vegan diets together as if they were the same thing. Ovo-lacto vegetarianism is a very, very big difference to a vegan lifestyle, especially when it comes to putting together healthy, balanced meals.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-06-22 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ovo-lacto vegetarianism is not inherently detrimental to the development of infants and young children.

You can make arguments about whether veganism is appropriate, but you're just wrong there OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If there's one thing I've learned lately it's that you need to learn to listen to your body and what it's telling you. If you're grossed out by meat (especially the fat) there's a reason for that. Fat is where most of the toxins collect, in people as well as animals. Your body might not want anything more to deal with in the toxin area!

Personally, I get hungry for meat during my period when I need the iron. But I'm much more likely to get hungry for nuts the rest of the time. Nuts have fats that are pretty good for me, as well as protein.

If you learn to listen to your body it can tell you lots of things about how to be healthy.

I never understood the concept of someone deciding that they were never going to eat meat ever again (religious reasons aside). I understand deciding that you don't really like meat and letting it naturally kind of phase out of your diet, but why do people make it into a big deal/major commitment?

(Maybe a vegetarian could answer?)

I've never eaten a single piece of meat in my entire life and my doctor has consistently told me that I'm healthier than most people. I've never had a single health problem as a child. Vegetarians are less likely to have stomach or digestion-related health problems, because vegetarian food is so much easier on the digestion. But then, my mother is Indian, she comes from a place where they actually know how to make a balanced vegetarian diet, and fed us/taught me how to cook that food.

The problem with a lot of vegetarians in the western world is that they think all there is to vegetarianism is to take a regular standard diet, remove the meat from it, and eat larger quantities of everything else. Ouch. That's a good idea if you want to wind up anemic and malnourished. Vegetarians *must* replace the nutritional value, especially protein, that they would otherwise get from meat with something else, and it's not too difficult to find nutritional guides to figure it out.

I cannot, by the way, imagine being vegan and never would become vegan under any circumstances. So I *totally* get why non-vegetarians would not become vegetarian. If I'd ever tasted meat, I probably wouldn't either -- I kind of relate to those depictions of vegetarians loving meat when they try it, because every time I smell fried chicken, I feel sure that if I ever tasted it, I could never stop. It is the most delicious smell in the world.

OP:

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
My reasoning is that A. I've seen multiple sources that advise against raising young children vegetarian due to the fact you need to be particuarly careful with how you do it (supplements, extra balanced diet, they're also a growing kid)
Not that it is literally impossible to raise a child vegetarian in a healthy way, but it involves much more care than balancing an adult's diet (which naturally, makes it even more likely that somone will fuck it up in some way)

The stories about people being picky about meat (I don't mean that in a condescending way, I don't think I could live without eating meat ever again, but I have absolutely nothing against people who can) remind me of one of my friends who had this thing where she couldn't eat meat unless her family cooked it (she's a bit odd) and labeled herself as a vegetarian until she realized that it was way to complicated to explain fully, so she stopped and continued to eat meat very sparingly.

I'm vegetarian, and will probably raise my future kids vegetarian. Maybe some fish at most, but yeah. No shame. I'm pretty health conscious and incorporate a lot of alternative protein sources into my diet, eat a lot of veggies and so on. If my doctor was worried about my hypothetical kids' hypothetical health, I would give them some meats, but otherwise? Vegetarian it is. I really think there are worse child abuses going on, and certainly worse nutritional atrocities (like feeding your kids fast food every day, excessive sweets and so on) - I'd be more worried about that if I were you.

I knew this family that were vegans, so no meat or eggs or milk. But they'd feed their kids oreo's and cheetos and all other kinds of junk food to get their calories and I was just so baffled. There's no way it was healthy for them.

I know a lot a vegetarians have it all figured out and can do it right but yeah some people get it wrong.

The discussion about how healthy vegetarianism is aside, I agree that the portrayal of such diets as super-quirky and veg*n people instantly loving meat may be a bit annoying.

I remember an episode of the Simpsons where the family had some young woman staying with them and Marge said she mixed meat juices in stuff like mashed potato, so Lisa (after she turned vegetarian) didn't notice it. I always felt something that was really uncaring of Lisa's opinions and preferences, as well as upholding a subtly scornful attitude a lot of America has against alternative diets.
