For me, it's texture thing. There are certain types/cuts of meats I just cannot eat, because my gag reflex won't allow it. Not that I dislike the taste, or what it comes from. Pretty much any fat or gristle, for example, or processed meat (like bologna). When I was a child, I rarely ate meat. I still don't like cooking it in my own house, because I have a problem with the lingering odor.

Exactly the same way. I'm so picky about meat, and it's almost entirely a texture thing.

Yeah, I used to freak out adults when I was a kid because I was so wary of eating meat. Meanwhile, my favorite vegetable was spinach.

It's pretty common for young kids to have meat aversions. My brother refused to eat red meat as a kid and it freaked my parents out for a while. He wanted corn and peas from the garden instead. He eventually grew out of it.

:D Not in my extended family. The fact that I preferred veggies was Not (considered) Normal.

Spinach is the absolute bomb though.

Agreed!

Despite Popeye, that would not have got you loads of iron, but it probably did give you plenty of calcium.

Oh wow, same here. I sort of thought I was the only one! Though it does sometimes extend beyond meat for me, it's still a texture/consistency thing. Everyone around me always acted like I was super weird for it when I was younger, and people (though not my parents, at least) would always try to get me to eat stuff even though I knew I couldn't get it down. I always kind of felt broken for it.

Mine goes beyond meat too, it factors into a lot of my food preferences. And yeah, no one seemed to get it when I was growing up. I also had a hard time putting it into words. In middle/high school and most of college it was easier just to say I didn't eat red meat, but I was still weird about chicken and still had exceptions I ate like corn dogs and crispy bacon, so I'm glad as an adult people care less about my food choices.

I was lucky, no one ever forced me to eat anything I didn't particularly like (though I had to 'try' something if something new was presented, specifically if we were at someone's house).

Yeah, I can't stomach anything in the consistency range of like soft serve ice cream, yogurt, jell-o, gummi bears, marshmallows, etc. Though in my case it's a CTA.

This is me. Fat and gristle are the worst. And while I can eat meat, I don't love beef unless it has a lot of sauce on it. Can't stand steak and don't love hamburgers. If it is a choice between beef and seafood, I'll go for the seafood every time.

I can do certain kinds of fish, but I hate any kind of shellfish. Lobster is completely wasted on me, ditto crab, mollusks, shrimp. Just. *shudder*

Steak is good if I can pick what kind to eat. Hamburger's okay.

I'd almost just as soon as have peanut butter or beans, and be done with it, though.

What about ribs? :O
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-06-24 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ribs are okay, but I'd still pick seafood or poultry first.

Eugh, I cannot DO ham. It's slimy. I also don't enjoy mixing sweet flavors with meat. (Except BBQ unagi sauce on sushi)

I don't like turkey, either. It may be because my mom over-cooks it, but I really, really can't enjoy turkey.
