I don't believe half the theories out there. The only one I am ride-or-die about is R+L=J.

But I still love reading them and seeing what people can dig up and piece together to come up with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think anyone who's read the canon is pretty sure R+L = J.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
People who read the canon were probably sure Eddard Stark would defeat the Lannisters until... well, you know.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
True. But that was based more on an unhealthy diet of the "Everything must have happy endings" and "Good guys must triumph in fantasy books" nonsense than out of anything present in the books.

I love reading the more outlandish fan theories. It's just amusing to see what people can come up with.

I think most of them are wrong, but I don't think it's because people are giving too much credit to GRRM. I think it's because they're taking things too literally or using the wrong genre. Like, the Bran = Ender Wiggins theory - disregarding any possible justification for it in the story, can you ever see GRRM writing a story where Bran is sitting in the Weirwood barking orders to a bunch of soldiers? It just doesn't fit together for me.

I do love theorycrafting in general, though. ASOIAF isn't as much fun for it as WoT was, but it comes close.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's not one of my preferred theories either, mostly because... well, it just seems like such a sad, boring end for Bran.

This reminds me of before the seventh harry potter book had come out, we had a book that was like ~what will happen in harry potter seven~ and it analyzed the first six books to find loose ends and foreshadowing and whatnot, and it was like. WAY more hardcore than the actual series, no joke I remember one part literally talking about some fly buzzing around and being like "this is important, she wouldn't include this if it wasn't important, THIS FLY IS GOING TO SHOW UP IN BOOK SEVEN."
So yeah, I guess what I'm saying is that ridiculous over-the-top fan theories are always fun, even if they give way too much credit to the author.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That was really silly. GRRM is pretty sneaky in terms of his plots and hidden connections, so I get why people would come up with tinhat theories, but Rowling is just not that complicated or nuanced of a writer. Her "foreshadowing" is strictly on a YA level.

Oh man, that reminds me. Do you remember the full on published fan theory books? Like the ones actually stacked in Borders/Barnes and Nobles/what have you? Those were the best.

I think my mom ended up buying one of the ones that was solely about Snape's true motivations.

I genuinely applaud your bemused "let them have their fun" attitude, anon.

tbf most long-running shows/books/movies/etc fall somewhere on the Wild Mass Guessing spectrum; I can still recall all the conspiracy nuts on alt.tv.x-files, who had MJ-12 and "everything" figured out -- even though it turned out later Chris Carter & Co were literally flying by the seat of their pants.

Contrast this with Babylon 5, back in the day, and hardly anyone dared (that I knew of) to float any really out-there speculation, that wasn't backed up by at least five minutes of footage/dialogue from the show...JMS was "in the room" though, so that may have had an effect.

TL;DR: Anon is as old as the green hills of Earth and waxing reminiscent, please excuse.

Almost everything I speculated happening and wanted to happen in Babylon 5 happened, but like in the worst possibly way. Which is why I learned to never predict or want anything from that show.

ROFL oh no I'm not laughing at your pain, fingal, I promise, but LOL that's hilarious, I'm so sorry.

YOU LEFT IT OPEN FOR ME TO TALK ABOUT MY GREATEST OBSESSION; I'M SORRY

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-06-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I find the Babylon 5 fandom takes special delight in other's pain while they watch the show. My followers on Tumblr were very amused by my flailing, let me tell you. There was the one time I was like "Oh gosh, I can't wait to see Londo and G'Kar interact again after that. I bet it'll be so snarky and great." But, no, it wasn't great. It was horrific. The next time they had a scene together G'Kar was fucked up on Dust, and we all know how that went.

Watching that show was so fucking fun, even though I'm still crying over it.

Different anon: Hee hee hee... Sorry, this must be my sadistic side coming out! :D

I am not part of the B5 fandom myself, but I cannot help but understand their reaction: but seriously, people who would be tactful and pat you comfortingly on the shoulder while you suffered are a bit unlikely to have watched and enjoyed B5, to be honest.

B5 was a great show with great actors and amazing storylines, but not known for its niceness to its viewers' tenderest feelings. Just saying...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why, if I were in charge of some big plotty series, I would throw out a whole bunch of red herrings and 'foreshadowing' at the beginning, sit back and observe as the clever fans tried to figure out my 'plan', then when someone thinks of an idea I like I'll nab it and later go "Wow, you clever people, you figured out my plan."

I didn't know I need a GoT/Ender's Game crossover...until now

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
You can chalk it up partly to boredom and desperation. If GRRM doesn't come out with a book in the next year, people will be using bibliomancy and looking for hidden clues in Martin's beard clippings.

(And as with the Potter series, I'm afraid I'll end up liking some of the fan theories better than the actual conclusion, assuming we ever get it.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
People did this with Harry Potter as well, and it was pretty much a monumental disappointment.

I'm just taking these as they come.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
Speculating is fine, but it can get out of hand sometimes when people start arguing about their theories as though they're already canon.
