I thought that the message was that Andrea shouldn't lose herself for what she thought was how to be successful, when in reality she was becoming a soulless clone of Miranda, who sacrificed a LOT for her success. In the end, Miranda was disappointed that Andrea didn't have what it takes to be her protege, but in a way is proud of her striking out on her own.

I watched this movie forever ago, sorry if I missed something.

You pretty much nailed it.

Woohoo, I thought that was simple moviegoer me of my adolescence speaking.

Yeah. That's what I got from the movie.

Yeah, that is how I took always it. Though I can see why others can interpret the end differently.

I got something similar from the movie.

Back then and most of the time since, I took away the message that "you shouldn't put your career ahead of everyone else". More recently, I've also gotten a probably-unintentional message about learning how to discern actual career advancement from someone just exploiting you for their own career or work.

This. I always felt that the point was that what constitutes success is different for every person, and that sometimes it isn't what you expect it to be.

No, that was what the message was SUPPOSED to be, but Andy didn't change at all except in her fashion sense. She started taking the magazine seriously, but she never became cutthroat. She was literally blackmailed into going to Paris.

Hm, that could be it. I remember the plot, but not really the characters, which would be important.

This. That message would've been more effective if Andy had changed. She really didn't do anything wrong, IMO.
