[The Devil Wears Prada]

From what I've heard, in the book she's a lot more selfish (apparently Lily goes into an alcohol-induced coma and Andy hesitates in visiting her because Paris!*), so they probably kept the sentiment of the book but made it less obvious what the issue is. But yeah, I honestly felt the same way; besides, what do you want to bet half the cast and crew didn't see their own friends and family for ages while making the movie? It always strikes me as hypocritical when major film companies make movies about not being selfish and working too hard for some insane corporation when, well...

*I could be completely wrong about that. This is all based on hear say.

SA

I did wonder why Andyw ouldn't just have her phone off at important times, though... yes, ignoring it was clearly not an option, but you can't do much if someone's phone is off, can you? Or can you?

It's true. I read the book many, many years ago but I do recall that Lily was hospitalized at one point and that was the slip-up that Andrea beat herself up over the most. Since the book was a memoir-of-sorts written in the first person, you kind of take the narrator's words at their face value, so when she told us she sucked, I believed it.

In the movie, not so much. I was sympathetic with Andy all the way, especially these past two years I've been working in a similar job.

...there are people that actually saw this movie? I thought that it only existed as fabulous Meryl Streep gifs.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen this movie at least 2 dozen times

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen it one and a half times -- I watched it once, then watched part of it again, before I remembered I had seen it already, and flipped to another channel.

you're missing the fabulous Meryl Streep dialogue- you could at least youtube it! I definitely didn't regret watching the whole thing though, fwiw.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed. The moral of the story is... don't try to improve yourself? Or something? Go back to the guy who was a jerk to you because he's kinda hot? Don't learn anything from a bad work experience??

I like the movie, but the end is bananas.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
The only good thing about the second book was what happened between them.

I thought that the message was that Andrea shouldn't lose herself for what she thought was how to be successful, when in reality she was becoming a soulless clone of Miranda, who sacrificed a LOT for her success. In the end, Miranda was disappointed that Andrea didn't have what it takes to be her protege, but in a way is proud of her striking out on her own.

I watched this movie forever ago, sorry if I missed something.

You pretty much nailed it.

Yeah, that is how I took always it. Though I can see why others can interpret the end differently.

I got something similar from the movie.

Back then and most of the time since, I took away the message that "you shouldn't put your career ahead of everyone else". More recently, I've also gotten a probably-unintentional message about learning how to discern actual career advancement from someone just exploiting you for their own career or work.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
This. I always felt that the point was that what constitutes success is different for every person, and that sometimes it isn't what you expect it to be.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
No, that was what the message was SUPPOSED to be, but Andy didn't change at all except in her fashion sense. She started taking the magazine seriously, but she never became cutthroat. She was literally blackmailed into going to Paris.

Meh, she was demeaning herself to a horrible boss. What sort of self-improvement is that?

I saw this movie once, many years ago. It was about selfish people making everyone around them miserable. I think it was trying to make a point about how damaging it can be to work for shallow, horrible people.

Yeah... I actually love the movie, it's so fun. But what a horrible ending. Maybe the book does it better, but Andy was trying her hardest to pursue her dream. Her boyfriend was sort of supportive in the beginning, but then wanted it all to be about him, and turned into a major dick. When she's trying to make amends with him at the end, he accuses her of doing it all for the fancy shoes and dresses, and she agrees. But that's total bullshit. I don't ever remember her becoming fashion obsessed, she just learned to appreciate it more, and how to dress appropriately for her job. Yes, the point of the movie is the cost of success, and that's fair enough. But it seemed in reality more about putting Andy in her place for daring to commit herself to a job that she was finally getting good at. Her boyfriend was such an asshole, and really at no point was Andy herself an asshole. Andy was pretty sympathetic and "the good girl" throughout the whole movie, even when she was accused of stealing opportunity from that other girl. If she had actually started to become like Miranda, maybe, but she was pretty much never that way.

Anyway. Yeah. Badly played out ending.

Didn't you know? Women aren't allowed to have careers!

(Sarcasm, BTW.)
