What in the goddamn happened in that one subthread

Anyway... I've seen it pointed out that this is a particularly gendered affliction. Women are conditioned to not talk too highly of themselves or the things they create, because that's considered arrogant and uppity and they're full of themselves if they think they're competent in their work. (When I thought about it, I realized I've never seen a male fanfic writer talk in a such a self-deprecating way about his fanfic, even when it was the most Godawful dreck this side of Sonichu.) Ever since I've realized that, I've made a conscious effort to stop making self-deprecating remarks about myself and my writing.

What seems to have happened is "people with opinions get murdered" vs "my life is hardcore you don't know me."

In other words...batshit.

I'm thinking about it and it's true, I don't think I've ever publicly posted 'this is terrible' when posting a fic. But I do have a fic page on my tumblr, and there's a category 'please don't read these.' Probably the closest I've ever gotten to saying 'this is terrible.'

I am in general pretty insecure about a lot of what I write, and I'm certain there are other guys who are too (I'm friends with one of them in fact), but we don't really say as much very often. Not publicly, anyway.

So there's probably something to your theory there.

I'm a male fic writer and I've said that stuff about fanfic! But only because it's uh like actually true, like "I wrote this at 3 am while basically stoned on painkillers," the implication there being "lol don't expect much I was literally brainvomiting," not in a self-deprecating way.

I think it's very different if you do that for one particular fic to explain how it came about, and if you have a track record of saying "oh I suck" for every single thing you post.
