Re: Another round of "Why Tumblr, Why?"

"How do you cope in real life" is such a tired question, because the simple truth (if you're really interested, and that question is not just your smug way of trying to get them to admit to overreacting) is that yes, wow, we do in fact cope very badly because we are stressed or triggered by some everyday thing that can't be avoided all the time because real life doesn't have tags/warnings! So the least someone else can do is put a tag on it on a site like tumblr where it is possible to do that, and that makes things that much easier on us for a short while.

And yes, "get help" has probably crossed the minds of most people with these issues, so no need to offer your advice about that. Just, help takes time and you can't completely put your life on hold for it.

Exactly. I'm in fandom for fun, and if I can avoid things that bother or upset me, I do. If someone wants me tag things that trigger them or bother them, then why not? It doesn't hurt me not to hurt them. "How do cope in real life?" irritates the fuck out of me because it just sounds like bullies telling people to suck it up. Sometimes you don't want to suck if up, sometimes you want to not have to suck it up.

At what point does that reach the level of absurdity? At what point do we acknowledge that it's not other peoples' responsibility to manage our psychological states and responses? Courtesy is wonderful and it often seems like there's too little of it, but at some point, the burden to take care of ourselves is on us and not on strangers, especially when that involves something so specific and uncommon that vanishingly few people are going to know about or think of it.

Depends who you want to keep around, really. Some people need a lot of it and that can be difficult to deal with, but most people who tag for triggers, content warnings, or whatever do common ones, whatever their friends need, and whatever they're asked to, which doesn't add up to that much unless they're popular or something.

But I agree it's a courtesy afforded, it's just your decision who you want to afford it to.

Thank you! I seriously hate the "how do you come irl?" stuff. It's so obnoxious.
