Agreed. It really is a fantastic-looking secret, and as a bonus, I totally agree with what the OP is saying in it.

Four for you, Anon OP, you go Anon OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, secret is very cute.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Not specifically for that character, but this kind of attitude really bugs me too.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
If someone says "if a person/character likes non-gender-stereotypical things or dislikes gender-stereotypical things, they MUST be trans and IF YOU DISAGREE YOU'RE WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG" then go ahead and complain away.

But that is not the same thing as perceiving/headcanoning/writing/drawing such a character as trans. Many trans fans see similarities to themselves in such characters, and so seeking representation they choose to interpret those characters that way. If they're not harassing other people who don't interpret the character the same way then it is not a problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
i think the problem here is that people tend to ONLY change buttercup into someone genderqueer/trans. and not a single other one of the characters.

which imo seems sketchy.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been noticing that lately too and think it's kind of weird. I don't generally have an issue with trans headcanons but I've never seen one of the other characters in the show given a trans headcanon and it's pretty obvious that they're only doing it for Buttercup because she's the most "masculine". Because apparently every little girl who roughhouses and likes doing "boy" things actually is a boy. Mystery solved!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Still trying to figure out where the 'women can like whatever they want and grow up to be whatever they like, even if it's tradionally a man's thing' school of thought has disappeared to. It's a little frightening how it's evolved into 'if you don't like pink and dolls you must be a man.'

Oddly enough, the only one of the girls I've seen trans!fic for in PPG is Bubbles. And always to make the (slightly anvilicious) point that a person can be cute and giggly and like doing "girl" things and still be a boy.

I don't know if that's adorable or insane

Personally of all the Powerpuff Girls, I'd go with Blossom being trans. Not sure why... Oh and Bubbles is gay. :)

I agree that gender essentialism is annoying. Though it gets more complicated when people are using their own experiences and end up coming up with the same headcanons as people who are just doing what you're talking about here.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Why can't they just be cis and straight, you fucking creep? They're kindergarteners.

... This was like, one popular fandrawing. God, Fandom!Secrets sure does like to take isolated instances of things and blow them up to be fandomwide trends as proof of "TEH SJWs!!1"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It happens a lot with many female characters who have stereotypically "male" traits/hobbies, though. So it's not really as isolated as you think.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
i think you're over exaggerating here.

how do you know op hasn't seen plenty of other fanart of trans buttercup?

i know i've personally seen a lot of people headcanon characters as trans for no other reason then not having stereotypical gender characteristics. if there was ever a male character introduced in any kind of media who preferred to wear dresses/skirts over pants for whatever reason, people would decide he's trans in a heartbeat.

If they're trans anything, why can't they be trans girls? Kids that age can know they're trans.

Having little girls like Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to look up to as a kid growing up--not just as cool girl characters, but as cool girl characters who had the parts I did and were still loved as girls and accepted as girls and heroes as girls--would've done me worlds of good.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not really sure how that would have worked in the context of the show since the girls were created in a lab though...

ugh. that sounds really annoying.

I was a bit like Buttercup as a kid, and never once even thought of myself as male. There are many ways to be female...I totally agree, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it feels like we can't win, OP. If a girl is too tomboyish or butch, she MUST be trans or a lesbian, if she's a girly-girl, she's not a 'strong female character'. The only acceptable option seems to be conventionally hot tough girl.

My friend used to babysit a boy that point-blank refused to believe that Buttercup was a girl. It bugged her too.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
People making Buttercup trans just because she's an atypical female is like saying that I'm trans.

...And I'm definitely not trans.

I think it's pretty ridiculous too, and offends me greatly.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I headcanon Buttercup as a trans girl.
