Nothing was ever confirmed. Pretty sure it was just a family and the owner was either a relative or just said "hi family!" becuase they... were a family.

But since the mother looked like a teenager, the confusion is understandable.

I just looked up a picture of it... and yeah, the largest of the dark-haired members could be a rather androgynous (for the animation style) woman.

I think the problem is that people probably jumped to conclusions about the role in the family of the blond guy in the centre. For all we know, he could be Oaken's younger brother, since Oaken is fairly light-haired as well (his beard is somewhere between blond and a light ginger).

Yeah. I mean, she follows the "young attractive female" mold of this movie: big eyes, tiny nose, tiny mouth and petite.

One of the theories is that he's a brother XD

I don't think it was confirmed either way, but the big guy in the middle was the only one who looked like an adult to me. And he was, well, in the middle, which made me think he was the dad.

I think there's a very good chance Disney intended it to be a gay family, but they'll never confirm it, with the controversy. As far as I know, the director flat out said, "We know what kind of movie we made, and it's up to everyone to interpret it for themselves."

Eh I respectfully disagree. If anything, this just shows Disney has a problem with infantilizing attractive young female characters. Elsa, for example, doesn't look anywhere near 21.

And even if they did - which, again, I doubt - a 1 second of a "may be gay character if I squint" doesn't count as representation and I don't believe Disney deserves points for it.

While stylized, Elsa very much looks like an adult to me. Especially with her voice actress, it would never have occurred to me that she was any younger than 21. Even Anna seems like an adult to me.

But since I really think the family was supposed to be gay - the male character in the center is obviously an adult, and the focus of the "family" - I don't think that's the case.

I agree with not giving points where it isn't due, of course. And I don't necessarily think Disney deserves points for ambiguity. But if they are taking baby steps toward gay representation, I'm very cool with that. Tied with Elsa's "coming out anthem" I think they were at least going for something progressive, even if most of the "progressive" elements were totally ambiguous and up to the viewer's interpretation. It may not be a great thing, but I don't think it's bad, either.

Eeeh we'll have to agree to disagree. This is why her voice and design don't match at all for me. And let's not even talk about her mother, who should be at least 15 years older than her and looks like her twin.

I don't see any evidence that points that way. It's very clear to me that the man and the woman next to him are supposed to be adults.

The thing is, can this count as a baby step when it's not even clear? Paranorman's gay character is a baby step. This? Eh.

Same with Elsa's "coming out anthem". Yeah it can be interpreted as such but unless Disney admits that's what they were going for, it's just a song that any person who felt like "letting it go" for whatever reason can identify with (like trans people identifying with Ariel, which is fantastic... doesn't mean this was Disney intent and they shouldn't get cookies for it)

What I think is bad is people taking this as proof that Disney is being pro-gay and praising them for something they didn't do.
