Trans woman makes sense because it explains why she's still presenting as a woman in the absence of her father's authority (as well as why prince --> princess). OP is kind of full of shit here, it isn't a "tumblr" interpretation - it's the general fandom interpretation of the character, including fanboy-dominated message boards. This isn't some "SJW" "headcanon". It's all but made explicit in the fluff.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)(Like, don't get me wrong Robin is still the worst character in the series, but it's not because of that...)
(AA5 spillers)
I would have preferred Robin to be an overcompensating boy who loves to look pretty. But no. I just kept thinking, "wait what? Wait wait wait, go back to the part where your folk raised you as a boy? That seems like a big deal why the fuck did that happen are you okay? What wait what no stop twirling and go back a few steps to this thing that was a pretty big deal just a second ago."

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)(Standard disclaimer that of course there are also just some nutty, vocal Tumblr users who take this kind of thing too far and get really vicious about it, and those kids need to stop.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 09:22 am (UTC)(link)I also feel like people seriously overestimate the amount of trans people in this world. Yes, a step onto tumblr or some choice LGBTQ+ platforms may make you think that the world is full of trans people, but it's really just a teensy tiny percentage. I understand that there should be some representation of trans people in media and I agree with that. But how would it be realistic (for lack of a better word) to have every media teeming with trans people when there actually aren't that many of them in RL?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)Eh... If I understand what you're saying here correctly (that F!S doesn't like any trans interpretations of characters because they're too SJW), I don't agree. From what I've seen, there are people who argue in favor to trans interpretations and people who argue in favor of cis interpretations. You won't get universally railed against for either. Similarly, there are people who are very anti-SJW and people who get annoyed by anti-SJW people.
Regarding the B!S, eh, I think you're right but I think for slightly different reasons. Japan has a view of trans people that's very different from the way it's conceived of in the U.S. For example, misgendering is not as big of an issue there as it is here because gendered pronouns are awkward to use. So you won't really get a character who deeply feels a certain pronoun is "wrong" and gives them dysphoria. I also think in anime it's more common for characters to be genderless, which is a different paradigm than what we have in the U.S. At the same time, in Japan, there are ways in which certain personality traits are seen as connected to gender in a way that isn't the case in the U.S. So basically, I just think expecting Japan to produce a trans character in the way we think adequate is pretty unrealistic, because their views of the meaning of gender and transgender is not the same as ours. I don't think it's wrong or backwards, though. I just think it's different. Gender is highly cultural; transgender I think is as well.
