I don't know the canon, but from what you've written, your theory makes serious sense and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.

It makes way less sense in canon. There's no one forcing Gwyndolin to present as a girl anymore, yet she still does. If Gwyndolin were a trans man, why would he do that? Why would there be earlier records of her a "prince" and later records as a "princess"?

Trans woman makes sense because it explains why she's still presenting as a woman in the absence of her father's authority (as well as why prince --> princess). OP is kind of full of shit here, it isn't a "tumblr" interpretation - it's the general fandom interpretation of the character, including fanboy-dominated message boards. This isn't some "SJW" "headcanon". It's all but made explicit in the fluff.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-02 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think your interpretation necessarily holds any more water than that of Gwyndolin being a trans girl or cis. There isn't a lot to go off of so any of these can be argued in a way that makes sense. I do find yours intriguing, though, and can understand your frustration at certain fans holding one interpretation more valid than others and attacking anyone who thinks otherwise (which is weird for a game like this where SO MANY THINGS can be viewed differently).

lol, I don't know the canon on this one, but this is really reminding me of how many people were mad about Ace Attorney 5 because of Robin's storyline apparently being transphobic. Everyone seemed convinced she was a trans man even though (like with this character, though the opposite) she was forcibly raised as a boy by her parents, which... sounds a lot more like a trans woman to me, if anything! So when it ends by affirming her identity as a woman, everyone got mad because it's supposedly telling trans men they'll be happier as their assigned sex. I swear, tumblr has a really hard time with comprehension on things like this, and it kind of embarrasses me as a trans person.

(Like, don't get me wrong Robin is still the worst character in the series, but it's not because of that...)

Ikr? She never identified as a man, and she was being forced to present as one. I don't see what about that is transphobic. There was a whole lot of nasty shit going on with that particular part of the case, but transphobia wasn't it.

I would have preferred Robin to be an overcompensating boy who loves to look pretty. But no. I just kept thinking, "wait what? Wait wait wait, go back to the part where your folk raised you as a boy? That seems like a big deal why the fuck did that happen are you okay? What wait what no stop twirling and go back a few steps to this thing that was a pretty big deal just a second ago."

What I can't stand is how tumblr takes characters who are clearly meant to be commentary on gender ROLES and goes "LOL THEY MUST REALLY BE TRANS!". It invalidates the entire point of their characterization and just reinforces sexism and gender essentialism by implying that any character who questions gender roles or doesn't quite fit into what we consider to be the standards of "male" or "female" can't actually be their birth gender.

Which is pretty fucked up, when you think about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the problem is there is a serious lack of trans characters in pretty much all media. If there were more characters who were textually trans, then trans audience members wouldn't have to latch onto characters who don't adhere to gender roles and have all these trans headcanons for them. But there aren't, so they're all kind of grasping at straws because it's as close as they're getting to seeing themselves in the media they enjoy.

(Standard disclaimer that of course there are also just some nutty, vocal Tumblr users who take this kind of thing too far and get really vicious about it, and those kids need to stop.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-03 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, a lot of the people who so aggressively latch onto trans headcanons nowadays are not actually trans people who want representation, it's cis girls who think they're being so ~progressive~ by following the newest trend. And they are the ones trying to silence actual trans people by telling them "this is not what being trans is". And it sucks.

I also feel like people seriously overestimate the amount of trans people in this world. Yes, a step onto tumblr or some choice LGBTQ+ platforms may make you think that the world is full of trans people, but it's really just a teensy tiny percentage. I understand that there should be some representation of trans people in media and I agree with that. But how would it be realistic (for lack of a better word) to have every media teeming with trans people when there actually aren't that many of them in RL?

If that were true, why would he (in this case) keep presenting as a girl after his father was gone? Why would a father "punish" his daughter by making her present as a girl?

Just... what?

I think his breasts are an error, honestly. Or the devs just don't care- i mean, look at the butchers. They have very masculine pecs, but they're still women. IDK maybe they're just inserts. I don't think the breasts have much to do with him being a man or woman biologically, is all I'm saying.

Or they're stuffed. Or faked in some way. Which, well, a trans woman might do in the absence of surgery/pills...?

Also you can absolutely have big pecs as a woman -_-

never said you couldn't

"Of course I expect no sympathy for this secret on a comm..."
Eh... If I understand what you're saying here correctly (that F!S doesn't like any trans interpretations of characters because they're too SJW), I don't agree. From what I've seen, there are people who argue in favor to trans interpretations and people who argue in favor of cis interpretations. You won't get universally railed against for either. Similarly, there are people who are very anti-SJW and people who get annoyed by anti-SJW people.

Regarding the B!S, eh, I think you're right but I think for slightly different reasons. Japan has a view of trans people that's very different from the way it's conceived of in the U.S. For example, misgendering is not as big of an issue there as it is here because gendered pronouns are awkward to use. So you won't really get a character who deeply feels a certain pronoun is "wrong" and gives them dysphoria. I also think in anime it's more common for characters to be genderless, which is a different paradigm than what we have in the U.S. At the same time, in Japan, there are ways in which certain personality traits are seen as connected to gender in a way that isn't the case in the U.S. So basically, I just think expecting Japan to produce a trans character in the way we think adequate is pretty unrealistic, because their views of the meaning of gender and transgender is not the same as ours. I don't think it's wrong or backwards, though. I just think it's different. Gender is highly cultural; transgender I think is as well.
