Bodyhacking, implants and the like.

So, two of my friends got magnetic implants today.

How it's supposed to work, or so they say, is you basically get an implant in one of the fingers of your non-dominant hand. The point is to develop a sort of "sixth sense" for magnetic fields and the like.

I find it fascinating.

I'm going to see if it works for them (I'm chicken like that) but depending on price and result...yeah, I might actually consider it.

I'd just be worried if I'd ever need an MRI or something...but man, the idea is just so cool to me.

What use could that be? feeling magnetic fields?

I'm not sure it's necessarily "useful" like seeing or hearing. I'm told that this one guy could apparently feel wifi.

Bit more info here: http://io9.com/what-you-need-to-know-about-getting-magnetic-finger-imp-813537993

The main point is to basically be aware of things in your environment you're not normally aware of.

....I highly doubt that would work as advertised (being buffered by flesh, veins, nerves, etc.) and even if it did...they likely wouldn't be able to "sense" any magnetic field other than an MRI with it...and they would have other problems, in that case.

I had an otolargynologist recommend a BAHA (bone-assisted hearing aid) implant to me once. (I am the deaf!anon who is not dethtoll LOL.) Practically ran screaming from the office, I did. Six! Titanium! Screws! On both sides of my skull. No, no, no thank you, no, definitely not.

Hmm, I'd be weary about my skull too. Then again I had gastric banding, which in retrospect was far more insane than any implant could ever be. The good thing is I now have two people who are basically willing guinea pigs so I can see if it works.

I have an implant (medical, not cosmetic) that will have its entire memory wiped and cease to work if I get too close to a strong magnetic field. I'm torn between thinking this is a great idea and being constantly paranoid now that people touching me will render my implant a useless hunk of very expensive metal.

It's supposed to not be strong enough to wipe things like phones or credit cards.
