Things you thought you would hate, but didn't

The opposite of the earlier thread! What pieces of media did you go into thinking you wouldn't like it, only to be pleasantly surprised?

Arrow - I thought it would be too silly, but I saw the first episode and I'm hooked.

The Blacklist: my mom recommended it to me, and I thought it would be another of her cop shows, but I really like it.

Moffat's run on Doctor Who.

I strongly dislike Sherlock, and that in combination with the massive, massive negativity that gets directed at Moffat's run on Doctor Who made me assume that I would hate it. But it was... not that bad. Mostly enjoyable, in fact. Not as good as RTD's run, and definitely flawed - the end of season 5 was stupidly convoluted, all of the plot arc stuff in season 6 was stupidly convoluted, the ontological importance of River and the Ponds and to a lesser extent Clara was far overplayed - but, I don't know, I still thought it was basically enjoyable. I like watching Matt Smith be the Doctor. I think River and Amy and Rory and Clara are all basically enjoyable characters when they're not caught up in overly convoluted and wanky plots. And I think there are a lot of good standalones during the period, and even during the times when it does get stupidly wanky, there's enough enjoyable business going on for it to carry through.

Yeah. Moffat's run is fine with me.

One Piece. I was tired of seeing Luffy's dumb smile in fanart all over deviantart (somehow I had a knack for running into OP fanart, even though back then it wasn't that popular) I was all set to hate-read it, but the moment I realized it was about pirates (the first page lol) I fell in love. My love affair holds on strong to this day.

Katekyou Hitman Reborn. My opinion on the first ep was "okay... wtf did I just watch." It's good that I continued because after a few more eps, I was HOOKED. HOOKED.

CoD... it just looked so bleh, like every other generic sepia shooter. But the first Modern Warfare, at least, is a fucking masterpiece.

When I first heard about the sequel to Last Exile, I thought I was going to hate it. I ended up loving it just as much as the first series. I also thought Fam, and Millia were much better main characters than Claus and Lavie. They could have done a bit better with Giselle though.

I picked up a novel called Dr. Franklin's Island solely because I wanted something with transformations. It turned out to be surprisingly well-written and affecting. (Also, it was pretty much THE story that taught me how to write close friendships with romantic undertones.)

Breaking Bad. I thought I would hate it so did not watch it until like a month before the final season. My sister finally made me give it a try. I LOVED it. I still love it.

Grimm. I had tried to the watch the first season when it aired but didn't, then gave it a second shot and wow, couldn't stop watching it.

Being Human US. I saw the UK version and just wasn't that impressed. A friend convinced me to give it another shot and I marathoned it.

Doctor Who - I don't like sci-fi much and I thought this one would be just like Star Wars (which I'm not that fascinated by <- whoa, burn her) but it turned out to be one of my favorite shows ever.

Wilfred - Idk, I thought I'd get disturbed by it since I don't exactly find inappropriate jokes funny, but it had a nice, sort of twisted storyline and it also had its moments in decent script and a good sense of humor.

Also movies like Megamind (story seemed repeated but it was an incredibly amazing movie).
And a Japanese drama called Ikemen Desu Ne (remake of a Korean drama that was nice and I hated the thought of it being remade to Japanese but it actually turned out fun and cute).

Megamind. I don't even know why the friend who dragged me to it insisted that we had to see it, given that she hates Will Ferrell to the point of "will not shut up about it, seriously." I knew literally nothing about the movie except that he was in in playing a supervillain, and I only went with her because I was bored out of my mind. It's now one of my favorite movies.

Arrow. I made a lot of fun of it at first but I've grown to genuinely like it.

The Venture Bros. as well. I saw some of the first season a long time ago when it was first airing and didn't care for it at all but last year I caught an episode of the most recent season and immediately got hooked and caught up on the show. I now think it's pretty well written and hilarious. Also Orpheus, Jefferson and Al are awesome.

Years ago, all these people I knew were reading this book and saying how good it was. I just rolled my eyes, because why would I read a kid's book?

Eventually I gave Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone a try. And that's how I got into fandom.

Friends. I was a little too young for it while it aired, but it always sounded kind of shallow to me. There are some 90's things that bug a bit (like lesbians being the essence of hilarity), and Ross and Rachel are annoying, but it's actually pretty good if you ignore those things.

Pretty much anything my mum recommends to me.
Perception is a notable example.

Firefly! In fact, I didn't even enjoy the first few eps, but I stuck with it and finally by ep four or five I began to see the light. I had never been into any kind of sci-fi show prior to that - now I like sci-fi as much as anything else.

Also I'm playing Panzer Dragoon Orta right now, which is a rail shooter on Xbox. I never imagined I would enjoy a rail shooter but then this magic happened.

Teen Wolf. I thought it was just going to be so full of drama with teens that may as well have been adults, ala 90210 and Gossip Girl. But I was pleasantly surprised by the fun, the teens that feel like teens, and the parents that aren't reduced to annoyances.

Arrow because I don't usually like DC and I really dislike the JLA.

Tangled because I don't like Disney princesses. Btw, Tangled >>> Frozen (and I did like Frozen)

The Lego Movie because it sounded way too childish for me.

Teen Wolf, Harry Potter (though I still haven't finished the books and haven't seen the films. I'm not super into it, but I read the books late; the hype around them caused me to irrationally hate HP, so when I finally gave it a chance I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the universe), Halo (wasn't all that into shooters at the time of Combat Evolved, but that changed), Dragon Age (don't ask me why because by then I was a BioWare fan, but during the promotional stuff I wasn't sure about Dragon Age. It even seemed like everything I would love, but I was cautious. Then it came out and I picked it up anyway and yes, Origins was beautiful).

Divergent. Wait, hear me out. I'm referring to the movie, cuz I know the book probably blows. I went to see it with a friend who was waay into it, and I just went along with her for the evening.

It's not high art, but I thought it was a fairly entertaining popcorn flic with a good female protagonist and oddly positive messages. The romantic relationship was balanced, the daughter/mother relationship was stong, and although heavy-handed and obviously tailored towards teenagers, the message was good.

Game of Thrones. I mean, I'm still not that fond of it (especially in comparison to what I'd heard and seen of the books), but the hate I'd heard about it seemed way overblown.
