I've watched the anime but aren't in fandom. Is he hated because he gets in the way of people's OTP or because of other reasons (voice, nagging, etc)?

I think it isn't so much the latter LOL, though some voices can be incredibly grating. It's one of the biggest reasons I can't stand Batman's Harley Quinn. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. But I tend to dislike silly high-pitched voices in general (this is particularly annoying in hentai anime OMG).

I'm not in the fandom either, but I've seen plenty of Nitori hate around. I think it's mostly just because he fawns over Rin? I dunno, but I've always thought he's adorable.

He's loathed because he has an annoying grating voice, doesn't know when to QUIT annoying his sempai, and is just the kind of person you want to kick across the room.

the first time i watched free i hated nitori because he has an awful voice and was a naggy twink
but i rewatched free the other day and i like him. his voice is still disgusting but he's not bad. he also makes rin more bearable.

I'm not a huge fan, but he's certainly cute! So...I can probably be won over if the show decided to do more with him. (Hopefully outside of Rin, this time.)

Yeah, the hate is way OTT. I only got annoyed at his idol-worship and "sempai please notice me" trope with Rin. If they do more with him with swimming, and friendship with others then I'll for sure love him.

You're not alone. He's my favorite because he manages to be supportive despite not being central to the life of the person he obsesses over. I love how in the drama CDs he writes about being happy for Rin despite being lonely himself.

This fandom is the absolute worst about letting fanon interpretations override the actual canon characterizations. People actually seem to believe that Nitori is some sort of crazy stalker, which I don't understand at all. I mean, it was a joke during the original run of the show (the joke being that someone had to be the yandere), I get that, but then people started taking it seriously? Ugh.

That said, I'm super-happy with the first episode of the second season and I can't wait to see more development on the Samezuka side.

No I dislike him because he's annoying as fuck in canon. I don't even know what his fanon persona is like, except him being called a "shota" alongside Nagisa (which admittedly annoys me to no end) and I still wish he weren't part of the anime.
