If he's a friend, like I'm assuming (again, haven't seen the show; but it's Superman, he's supposed to help), then just stay for a while until the guy's not rearing to kill himself right then and there. I know you probably have more experience than me with the topic, but from my personal experiences with both trying to kill myself and with trying to help my friends who've done the same, just BEING there instead of gallivanting off is a much better option. It's one thing when you're unaware of the situation, it's another when someone has just tried to commit suicide and you're aware of it, and STILL leave.
If there's a super good reason Clark had to leave, then sorry, but not really.

Or at least get them to someone else who can help and/or stay with them? I feel like you'd have to be a pretty terrible person to know that someone has just tried to kill themself and then leave without really doing anything. (haven't seen the show, either, btw)

Exactly this. It can take a while for someone to get out of the "I'm doing it right now" mindset (or at least, it was for me, I won't presume this is/was the case for everyone...). It's not right to leave a person alone at a moment like that.

I can see what you're saying. I have never experienced the type of people who you mention in your second parahraph - those who use their suicidal feelings to manipulate people, so I've been working only with the thought of those who keep people out of the loop in mind. In a case like that, I think not being there in that instant is legitimately a case of "there was nothing you could really do" since you can't know what is serious or what is an attempt at attention-grabbing with no real intent to harm.

I also understand what you mean about vilifying friends; but I think that being there is expected in any friendship. Missing a phone call or such is excusable, you CAN'T be there 24/7 for a person like you said, but for that one moment when they seriously need someone with them? Yes, as a friend you should help. If you're not there and don't know they're right on the brink, okay, you're only human. However, if you are there with them, in person, and still can't be bothered to help? That's a problem.

Sorry about attacking you; my phrasing was pretty rude. This is something that's eaten up the majority of my life so I can get unreasonable about it. My apologies.

I've my own hang ups about how people ignore anything that might make them uncomfortable, but I also like to think that in an extreme instance most people would do good. Thanks for sharing your views, I was being prickly but it was in actuality very interesting.

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. Just having someone there can help.
