Ugh.

That awkward moment when you have to tell someone "I didn't like that thing you recommended to me" without adding "It was actually so terrible I wanted to gouge my eyes out, and I don't think I will ever trust anything you recommend again."

What was it?

Is it bad as in badly made or just really not your genre? Because I think there's a difference.

Both. I don't know what made her think I'd like this kind of story, and it's a badly-told one on top of it.

I don't I've ever had to tell anyone unless they followed up on it to check my opinion. Usually I just quietly drop it and only mention it in relevant places like F!S rant threads.

It's a former friend who's trying to rekindle things with me (and going way too fast, but that's a separate issue), and I made the mistake of mentioning that I'd started watching the show. She will continue to harp on it until I say something. Which I will do politely, when I finally do, but I needed to complain.

Aw. Some folk just suck at reading the other person or knowing they're doing the nag. Good luck getting back in touch (or not) with your friend though.

Yeah, the nagging/hovering is something she's always done, which I wish I'd remembered before saying anything. I'd shrug and take it as "just a thing she does" if it wasn't for the "rekindling" thing. We've been out of touch for something like five years because reasons, and have only been back to talking semi-regularly for a couple months. There's a certain degree of dialing-back-until-you-get-used-to-each-other-again that needs to be done in these situations, and she's...not doing it.

Hahah, oh dear.

I've had this experience twice now with a friend recommending me books. I was left wondering: "Who /are/ you? Why on earth do you like this? It's awful!"

But hey, we're still friends. People like what they like. Hell, there's probably stuff I've recommended to her that she's absolutely loathed. But that's what friendship is all about - pretending you like stuff when you secretly want to wipe it from your memory!

I know this wasn't a request for advice, so please disregard this if it doesn't suit you:

Draw those boundary lines firmly, and ASAP if you plan on re-establishing this friendship.

Seriously. Don't let her annoying behaviors slip in or you'll have to put up with them for as long as the friendship lasts. NOW is the natural time (after you've both had a break from the relationship) to go, "You know what? I'm a different person now and [this this and these behaviors] don't work for me. I need to slow things down a LOT to feel comfortable. Can you do that for me?" (Don't skip the last part.)

I used to be that person. Then one day a friend reacted in that way, not as a direct attack toward me, but as an attack toward the thing I had encouraged him to get into. Technically it was part of a bigger series that we all loved, but I still felt bad because now all I was hearing in discussion was the hate, and how dare the creators dump such a piece of shit on the fans, rageragerage, etc. I backed down quite a bit but made one more attempt to restore the faith by asking if he'd gotten into the next part of the series--to which he replied, he wouldn't bother getting into the current thing because he felt like the creators "cheated on him" with the previous part. Yes, cheated on him. His words.

We're not friends anymore, though his attitude in general and waning interest in his friends contributed more to that.

(On a side note, I find the timing of this topic funny, because I was just participating in a discussion about this kind of thing on another board.)

a friend of mine insisted on playing a bunch of mighty boosh eps and watching them with me. I just sat there grinding my teeth. I LOVE LOVE LOVE most British humor but I didn't find that show the slightest bit funny. Oddly enough, we love most of the same shows, especially British ones, but i never want to watch one nanosecond of that show again.
