When people pull away from the canon.

I know we're writing outside of the canon anyway (for the most part), but it is sometimes nice for the fandom to remain at least within waving distance of it.

It's hard for me to even understand why you would, because I got into fic purely for the speculation factor - what could've happened, what might happen, etc. It never crossed my mind that some people were just into it for the shipping until I started posting on LJ. I get it now, but still have a very canon-centric mentality.

You mean writing things that are very AU? As long as it's labeled AU and they're not claiming otherwise, I don't see the problem.

There are plenty of shows/fandoms where I like the characters but not the storyline, or I like the premise but not the execution. So yeah, in that instance I would disregard the actual episodes and just have fun with the characters...
