Things you hate about shipping

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily that you hate shipping in general, like miniature!OP of secret #7, but just things that you hate about shipping -- ESPECIALLY specific gripes about your specific fandoms.

When one character in a pairing is designated the bottom by fandom (generally decided by size) so that 90% of fics have him as the bottom. O:< That is so annoying.

I've never been a big fan of it really, so it's frustrating when it's a big part of any fandom I'm part of.

(Though, shipwars can be hilarious to watch.)

How, so often, it's one or maybe two pairings dominating the archives.

And how little long, non-crack gen there is. One of my favorite things about fics is that it's like getting another episode of your favorite show (chapter/book, etc), but I just don't see much of that anymore. I know it's out there, but I get bored just looking for it.

I like slash, and I even like yaoi, and often pairings I like, I have a preferred "seme/uke", at least for aesthetic purposes. But I hate when the slash pairing in question changes the characters - particularly the "uke" role character, describing him as smaller and thinner than he actually is, and giving him a wimpy personality. Especially hilarious in those fandoms where there are rivalries between which guy is the top and which is the bottom, and both sides change the characters accordingly.

The way people around me are dismissive about multishipping. They will treat "rival" OTPs with common courtesy, "oh, you ship A/B? I don't like B and prefer A/C myself but that's OK" but "what do you mean you ship both A/B and A/C? that's WRONG! you obviously don't like either ENOUGH! stop whoring, you HAVE to pick ONE side!"

I guess I can't really hate it because it's just human nature, but sometimes the main ship in a fandom being decided by whoever is the most attractive instead of who has the most chemistry is really annoying. (Why all Arthur/Eames and no Cobb/Saito, Inception fandom? Why?)

What siofra said about a couple main ships dominating everything else.

I sort of love and hate the people who can't accept the existence of multi-shipping. It's weird because I love ship wars but I can't stand individual character bashing.

Somewhat related to the character bashing thread above, I've gotten MANY friends into Doctor Who over the years. One ended up being a hardcore Doctor/Rose shipper who seemed ~okay~ with Martha when we went through season three even if said friend occasionally called her useless. Fast forward a couple months as she's getting some other mutual friends into the series. I went over to one of their places to watch a couple eps, and there's my friend cursing at Martha and calling her a bitch whenever she doesn't do something completely 100% right and/or hesitates for any reason whatsoever.

I don't think I've ever side-eyed a person so much in my life as I did then.

Crazy shippers who get angry at the creator for the ship not being endgame. (I know I've seen it in fandoms other than Harry Potter, but I'm blanking on other examples.)

Shipping a pairing because you hate most the popular alternative (or "I ship A/C because I hate A/B").

Shipping because you think one of the characters "deserves" the other, or so that one of the characters is with someone besides another character who you think doesn't deserve them.

Glorifying yuri and femslash, acting like you're a more progressive human being because f/f is your preferred dynamic.
++ Using your shipping preferences (whatever they may be) to show how progressive you are.

The attitude that there is some kind of threshold on love where, if you attain a certain depth, you automatically develop sexual/romantic feelings out of nowhere just 'cause (basically, treating romantic love as a question of scale rather than type.) This is insulting to deep friendship/family bonds, but more than that, it makes the romantic relationship in question feel really immature and inauthentic, like romance is some sort of magic fairy dust drug trip.

Conflating romantic love with the desire to be in a stereotypical white picket fence domestic bliss style romantic relationship and stay in a little bubble, even when the characters are wildly unsuited to it.

Fic/meta whose portrayal of a romantic relationship is so narrowly focused on and obsessed with the sexual aspects (and so obsessed with the idea of 'explaining' everything in canon as sexual tension) that the unintentional implication is that the only reason someone cares about what happens to another person is because they really want to have sex with them and can't do that if the other person is dead. Oops.

When people pull away from the canon.

I know we're writing outside of the canon anyway (for the most part), but it is sometimes nice for the fandom to remain at least within waving distance of it.

Being focused on the ship being "endgame" to the dismissal of all other considerations for the show regarding storytelling, logic, and in-universe coherence.

I don't care WHAT people ship, but I can't stand it when people ship skeevy/fucked up pairings and refuse to admit there's anything skeevy about them or treat them like they're cute and romantic.

Ship what you want, but own it.

When the most popular pairing is based on two characters who hate each other in canon, and are usually lovey dovey in the fanficion.

I wish it didn't seem so many fandoms were almost mostly shippy. I don't know if it was the fandoms I used to be in or if fandom's just changed, but even in the ones I was in where shipping still took a LOT of precedence, you could still find fics that were a happy medium between no romance and mostly romance, you could still find non-ship based discussion, that sort of thing. I have nothing against shipping, but I'd love to read a fic that both celebrates my OTP and other characters/themes that aren't necessarily romantic. Or have a discussion along those same lines.

When shippers downplay/ignore the characters' important canon relationships with other characters in order to make their ship seem more special or romantic.

Re: Things you hate about shipping

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Character A is angsty as fuck and I ship him with Character B who has no real backstory in canon? Well let's make Character B's backstory as dark and fucked-up as I can! (AKA broken people are always perfect for each other)

Re: Things you hate about shipping

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
When characters are blatantly OOC.

I don't care if I dig the ship. If character A is written as possessive and controlling and character B is written as passive and accepting of A's behavior, when A would never be possessive/controlling and B would never take A's shit, I will nope out of there pretty quickly.

I'm ship and let ship until people miss the whole point by insisting that their pet ship is the only reasonable interpretation of published works, or that future published works should change to accommodate the pet ship.

Especially when they tag social justice rhetoric onto their arguments.

Canon tinhatting.

Campaigns to make your OTP canon for "representation". NO. If it was another main character they made gay/bi and it had nothing to do with your ship, you would be unhappy about it.

That any other close friends to your OTP are "threats" so you have to downplay their friendships. HOLY SHIT, NO.

Hating a rival character who 'gets in the way'. I haaaate that.

My OTP in Zelda fandom (for Ocarina of Time, specifically) is Link/Sheik (with Sheik as a separate character, yes yes I know), but the biggest ship is Zelda/Link. (I actually do like Zelda/Link, and REALLY like Zelda/Sheik, and all three in an OT3, but that's neither here nor there.) Ocarina Zelda is my favourite character in the entire series.

There is SO MUCH Zelda-bashing amongst other Link/Sheik fans that people think that because I ship it, I must hate Zelda as well, when Zelda-bashing is literally the fastest way to make me backspace the hell out of a fic. She's my gorgeous queen, can my fellow Link/Sheik fans PLEASE stop attacking her? ;_;

(Come to think of it, I'd also REALLY like people to stop saying they prefer separate Sheik "because he's a cool badass ninja and she's a useless Princess!", because fuck no she's amazing just as she is and Sheik is kind of a giant dork at times - lol jumping into a lake to make a ~dramatic escape~ - and there are SIGNIFICANTLY better reasons to interpret them as separate characters, but that's not really shipping-related.)

I hate fic writers who manage to make a sex scene be mostly dialogue. WTF.

Then again, I dislike any type of fic that is mostly dialogue, but this seems especially weird, pretentious, and unsatisfying.
