...got any examples? The only ones I'm thinking of have popular pairings where both sides hate each other, but not the most popular pairing.

YES. If it happens I want a long fic showing the long journey and all the development to get there.

You're right! If a fic can make it make sense then that makes a difference, but it's hard to not see fic for such pairings and not look because, well, you think it would be instant ignoring of the hatred.
