Re: Birdy woes

Has he already taken one from the wild? If he hasn't, then yeah I'd speak up, mention that it's illegal and he could get into trouble for it, and that also (this is a bit of a "duh" but apparently your friend needs it) wild animals are usually wild because they make very, very poor pets. Behavior is often not what you'd want in a domesticated animal, not to mention diseases. Check out "West Nile virus". Your friend does not want that shit.

If he's already taken a bid, then I'd suggest looking for licensed wildlife rehabilitators in your area. You could even suggest to your friend that since this is an interest of his, he might pursue learning how to do it properly, get licensed, and then do this for real.

Another good resource:

Man, I didn't even think of diseases, but you are totally right that is a risk? It's not like you can just take a WILD bird to a vet to get its shots or whatever, especially if its illegal.

And unfortunately he seems to have already taken one; he was texting me pictures this morning. (Which I didn't respond to cause I wasn't sure what to say besides 'oh my god you kidnapped a bird'.) Thanks for the resource though this is some good information.
