Birdy woes
(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)One of my friends wants a pet bird, so his solution to this is apparently to just take a young bird from the wild and keep it. I think that's kinda messed up (I think wild animals should stay in the wild, even birds, and why can't he just buy a bird?), and actually one of my other friends has looked into it and its illegal to keep this particular type of bird as a pet in my state. (Not sure why, something about it being a native bird and therefor protected? I haven't looked into the law myself.)
Do you think I should say something F!S? He is really excited about his new bird and idk if I want to burst his bubble/risk getting him mad at me, but I honestly don't agree with his choice about this bird. Or should I just keep my mouth shut cause its just a bird and its not like he's keeping an illegal exotic monkey or some shit.

Re: Birdy woes
(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)I too agree wild animals should remain in the wild, and I personally feel bad when I see birds caged up. Be sure to remind him it would be his responsibility afterwards, and it's not like he can just return it when he feels like it.

If he's already taken a bid, then I'd suggest looking for licensed wildlife rehabilitators in your area. You could even suggest to your friend that since this is an interest of his, he might pursue learning how to do it properly, get licensed, and then do this for real.
Another good resource:

(Which I didn't respond to cause I wasn't sure what to say besides 'oh my god you kidnapped a bird'.) Thanks for the resource though this is some good information.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 12:59 am (UTC)(link)Illegality aside (which, yes, unless it's a sparrow, a starling or a pigeon, it IS illegal), that bird is going to die. Baby birds need to be fed every 15 minutes from sunup to sundown. And they can't just be fed birdseed; they require a specially-mixed diet.
If it's somehow miraculously still alive, call animal control. They'll come get it and transfer it to a licensed rehabilitator.
Oh, and tell your friend he's a dumbass for me.
Re: Birdy woes
(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 03:00 am (UTC)(link)(I will definitely pass along the dumbass by the way. I am really frustrated with him. It really seems like he hasn't thought this through at all.)
Re: Birdy woes
(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 03:22 am (UTC)(link)But yes, it would be in the bird's best interest if you guys could get it to a wildlife center. Wild birds are not meant to be pets. He'd be better off going to a pet store and getting a hand-raised baby parakeet if what he wants is a young bird who will be friendly and affectionate towards him.
Also, if he wants a bird of any sort, he needs to be prepared: they're LOUD, even parakeets.

Quit worrying about his feelings or whatever - he's deliberately killing an animal.
