Re: Birdy woes

I don't think its a total baby (It looked like maybe a fledgling to me from the pictures I was sent, but it was hard to tell they weren't high quality) but apparently (I just found out) he found it on the ground so I am worried it might be hurt or sick? I am talking to one of his roommates right now and I think we are going to join up and convince him to take the bird to a wildlife center. Its hard cause a lot of our mutual friends seem totally fine with it and supportive of him...

(I will definitely pass along the dumbass by the way. I am really frustrated with him. It really seems like he hasn't thought this through at all.)

If it was fully feathered but on the ground, it's a fledgling. Birds leave the nest before they can fly properly and spend a few days on the ground practicing, so chances are it isn't hurt or sick at all.

But yes, it would be in the bird's best interest if you guys could get it to a wildlife center. Wild birds are not meant to be pets. He'd be better off going to a pet store and getting a hand-raised baby parakeet if what he wants is a young bird who will be friendly and affectionate towards him.

Also, if he wants a bird of any sort, he needs to be prepared: they're LOUD, even parakeets.

Thanks for the bird info, I'm glad we at least probably aren't dealing with a sick bird. His roommate has been talking to him and apparently he knows its illegal but doesn't care, and with that being the case I don't know what we can do to convince him? It feels very morally wrong to me to just take a wild bird off the ground. It's a migratory bird and I don't think it should be cooped up...

Technically you could report him to animal control because it's illegal. Might teach him a thing or two about just picking up animals out of the wild.

Personally, i'd find a wildlife rehab place, and then just take the bird there, or have his roommate take it when he's not home. Fuck this guy - he's going to kill a baby bird by being an utter jackass, because it *will not* thrive on whatever crap he's going to feed it and it will die because it is *not a pet*.

Quit worrying about his feelings or whatever - he's deliberately killing an animal.
